By the way, that agar you are using is just about as dark as the agar recipe I am working on. Is that just grain water that you are using that makes it that dark or are you using something else?

I use powdered dark malt extract instead of light malt extract. It was cheaper.

I get a pound of GLME for 5 bucks and change at the brewing supply store down the street. Any noticeable difference between dark and light ME in terms of how the mushrooms like it?

I don't notice a difference wither way. Malt extract is malt extract, as far as I can tell.

Depends on the method of inoculation.

I generally see growth in 3 to 7 days but it can take a couple weeks.

Spore germination on agar takes the same general amount of time as spore germination on brf/grain. So, anywhere from 5ish-15ish days.

If you're germinating spores on agar, make a softer agar by adding less agar to your recipe. Spores germinate on softer agar easier.

I wanted to ask - why is the condensation such a big issue? contams?

Condensation in agar media vessels can be a vector for contam to the mush culture running on the agar.  Another major foul created by condensation generated inside of your agar media vessels is not being able to see culture performance through media vessel.

I've had some plates, when playing with the recipe, turn out very firm like dried candle wax. It still worked out for me.

Softer agar for spore germination.
Stiffer agar for transfer work.

This is a generality, either agar stiffness will work for either application, even if it's not ideal.

15-20g/L is an acceptable range for food grade agar dish making.

going to add a little yeast to my formula 1 cup water, 5grams agar,6.6grams potato flakes,1/4 tsp karo. can I use one of these? which is best and with that formula how much? I am in a hurry, if not I would do a search. Thanks in advance

either one will work, but i'd go with red one

i use 1g/500ml h2o, so for ur recipe use .5g per cup h2o
