11/6/14 low of $15.28 looking to be revisited and mayhaps passed if this pace keeps up.  i can't see the fed tightening in june with this kind of incredibly rapid appreciation of the USD.  exporters would get assfucked.

that being said, i think they should do it anyways.  i think?

It's going lower. Dollar strengthening.  Fear trade dropping. Gold will get below $1,000 and that signals a probable bottom or at least short term bottom.

I wouldn't mind doubling down on 10/1000 for gold/silver, but it really needs a financial discussion with the wife with what we want off the books and if it is, truly, long term. It's looking like it is anyhow. I'd never sell on a loss. I'd rather be penniless and insane playing a record with a Morgan dollar.

A hundred to one gold to silver ratio seems extreme, as does a low of 10 on silver.  I can imagine gold testing a thousand.

And speaking of a hundred, the DXY US dollar index is on a tear, and currently 99.74.

Just sharing a personal story or two. Related to the thread but you can skip it if you want. No technical details.

I should have listened to my gut and spent my 20k savings on gold in 97-2001 at approx 300 an ounce. Anyone can say that with 20/20 hindsight but still.

I was still sorta-kinda collecting coins and buying friends coins at the time. Got a few huge bars and a sterling flute from a musician. I really should have stuck with it.

Would've been a lot more coin shows with dad and Joey, too, had I stayed attentive to the hobby and metals.

Father sold his gold but his massive purchase was in 1970 at $40/oz so he didn't get out too bad at 2002-2003 making 10 times his investment.

My grandmother did the same thing in 2010-2013. Grandpa and dad went in on it together because of the gold laws that didn't end until 1975. They would run coin show circuits and pick up coins and bars here or there starting in 1969 I believe. Grandpa started hoarding in 64 when we went off the gold standard.

Quote:

December 31, 1974 ended the era of private U.S. gold ownership restrictions which had begun in 1933. As of January 1, 1975, U.S. citizens were again free to own gold in any form, including bullion, and in any amount that they can afford, without restrictions or any federal ‘reporting’ of those holdings.

Smart long-term planning on their ends. Paid off their houses and then some.

I'd really like for a similar payout. Be older, be needing it, cashing out to wrap up our property and assets. I'd still sell half if it hit 50 tomorrow though that's for sure.

If the ten dollar thing hits and I double down then I'm forgetting about them and purchasing/selling for a long time. Let them collect dust. Dust on old coins means more money for the most part.

We inherited this. Very very cool. Mid 70's art bars, gold plated .999 silver.

Thanks for sharing.

I think it highlights mostly the protection of assets versus a falling dollar.  A share of SLV is unlikely to give you the same long term protection, or look anywhere near as pretty.

The Fed doesn't need to tighten, the market is doing it for them already.  The USD has officially gone parabolic, yet silver hasn't bit it yet.  Watch out below next week, the only thing that can keep it from getting pounded would be any geopolitical concerns.

I think we are heading for a test of 14.09 and a failure there.  Aooga!

Exactly, and that is something to be considered, say they made holding silver illegal (again like it was for over 40 years), and the price truly was 3 again, and you could at least get 5 for "cashing them in" because it is legal tender.

Interesting week with the USD hitting 100 then failing pretty hard on Weds, bouncing Thurs, then down again today Friday.

Silver in particular has had a big bounce up to the high 16s today and up nearly 5%.  Apparently Janet Yellen being patient while removing the word patient is filling up the QE punch bowl along with Europe China Japan etc. devaluing.

The big bear flag on silver is big and on the top end of it.  Low 17s are intermediate resistance.

No way around it, the dollar is going  to strengthen more.  Short term bouncing around and volatility a certainty, but the trend is toward a stronger dollar and gold/silver weakening.

I think you are right, this is just a big short covering rally on oil and the metals but it won't last...

What if we find a way to replace oil with some new energy technology and start mining asteroids. Gold and silver could become as cheap as steel!

Perhaps, but it poses no short or even medium term risk yet.

Ran into a guy who owns a very large antique "mall".. huge business.. in the Fargo/Moorhead area. He and I have been talking metals since the peak.

He said he's not even going to estate sales, auctions and especially tag sales this year. He made almost 10k at silver's oeak. However, he said the price of a pure sterling antique is higher than the melt and they don't sell. He said at least with my coins the numismatic value stays but antiques and sterling sets are a completely different game. There's not enough money in it for him when silver is below 35.

Best I've done is 115 dollars in flea-market purchases to almost a thousand in melt. Best he did was 250 and melted "a couple grand"... guess that's why he owns the giant store and I don't.

There are many variables in this but the above speaks loudly for the market, at least out here.

I'm still going to garage / lawn / estate sales, auctions and flea markets. A lot of people think their stuff is plated because someone bought it cheap 50 years ago and don't check hallmarks. Others do the opposite, insist it's 90-99% and it's not even plated.

The auctions start in a month at the latest. You can buy some boxes full of stuff for a dollar. My aunt's mother does this a lot - like 200 boxes - and she cleans up every year.

We will see how it goes.

Anyone else do this? It's a fun hobby.

I just carry a worn silver half dollar and a worn Morgan dollar and just listen to the sound. It's (kinda) harder on items that are used for liquids because the way the sound travels through it and resonates.

Otherwise, knocking it lightly against a spoon or a cake server makes the same sound. Tap your two coins together, tap the spoon with your coin, and if unsure check the hallmarks. Google. There's a ton of them, a lot more for manufacturers.

You can also fire off a chest sheet with a dozen or so obvious hallmarks for silver content.

I've found the coin trick is faster if the hallmarks are worn and I also don't have to break out my loop for every item. Makes it apparent to the seller you're interested and also that their 3 dollar price tag could be 100x lower than it should be.
