Using legal highs 'got worse and worse' says one former addict [UK]

By James Waterhouse 11 March 2015

After banning more than 500 types of legal highs, the government says it's going for a change in tactics.
Confiscated drugs are tested by government experts and if they believe they're dangerous, the substances are banned individually.
However, some manufacturers then tweak the ingredients to make a new drug which has a similar effect, but isn't illegal.
Now the government says it is moving to stop this in England and Wales.
Ministers are looking to bring in a new law later this year, which will bring in a general ban based on what the drug does rather than what it's made of. What are legal highs?
Legal highs are substances which produce the same, or similar effects, to drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, but are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
In many cases, they are designed to mimic class A drugs, but are chemically different enough to avoid being classified as illegal substances, so it is legal to possess and use them.
Nineteen-year-old James Birchall started smoking synthetic cannabis when he was 16.
"They weren't as bad back then, it was kind of a new thing, we started them because we were smoking weed, and it was a cheaper way out really.
"From then on it got worse and worse really."
He then realised he soon became addicted to the drugs, which he had to get treatment for.
"Because the change of chemicals just made it so much stronger, before you knew it you were hooked on them.
"Everything's more intense really, you giggle more, you'd sit in your own box and just zone out."
19-year-old James Birchall smoked synthetic cannabis for three years
Newsbeat spoke to a 23-year-old who had a similar experience.
Sam, which is not his real name, said: "Some of them are OK, some of them I feel happy and I feel like I want to laugh and joke, and other times I'm worried people are looking at me or saying something about me.
"There are some mornings where the night before it's worn off and a few hours later I feel really bad in myself on the come down.
"I feel really bad inside like I'm never going to be able to get off it, I'm never going to be able to get myself away from it because it's so addictive."
Crime Prevention Minister Lynne Featherstone said: "I will be working right up until the dissolution of parliament to ensure we have done as much as we possibly can to pave the way for a general ban.
"This will mean the next government can act quickly to clamp down on this reckless trade."

This ban seems pretty fucking ridiculous. That means they'll outlaw hundreds if not thousands of undiscovered, untested chemicals that could potentially be used for something good later on down the line

I hope someone explains to these fuckwits that the reason that these drugs exist, and there's a demand for them, is because they banned the safer, natural alternative. But they sacked Professor Nutt and probably too busy fucking and killing kids to read any report from the acmd

Exactly. It shows how crazy and backwards, and anti-science we really are as a culture, it's sickening.

I'm not worried about the RCs, but I am definitely worried about Kratom and Saliva.
Medicine has proved thousands of years ago that drugs DO have benefits, and education, knowledge and a prosperous and well society are the keys to reaping these benefits, not absurd criminalization.

I never used synthetic cannabis but this is the same thing I hear. A buddy of mine was telling me the other day the new spice he got is not even like thc, he says he feels like he's smoking "space crack." I guess the first couple were pretty good but the more they outlaw the worse they get. I always preferred to stick with organic stuff myself.

I took one TINY hit off one of the new spice blends around me. It was so powerful it's scary. I literally only took half a normal hit off a joint and thought I was dying. Didn't even hold it in longer than 2 seconds. I could feel all my organs shutting down (at least I thought) and was breathing super heavily. After 10 mins I came down and flushed the rest. The older blends from a year or two before we're actually decent. They were mellow and stoney. That new stuff felt like I took a bong rip of bud, meth, and crack all mixed together.
