alkaloids and clorophyl - their relationship
    #2140185 - 11/27/03 11:32 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

hi everybody!
from years i've been surrounded by plants and only recently these thoughts started to hit me.
what is the relationship between clorophyl and the alkaloid building in plants?
did you ever smoke yellowened salvia leaves and compared to dark green ones, for example? it applies to cacti, et cetera...
i'm looking for serious inputs, thoughts, guesses or finger glossolalia.
oh btw, i might be saying bullshit.

ive read alkaloids are by -products of the photosynthasis. each plant having there own. but how they produce them is still a mystery to me. amazing.

great input the man!
could you elaborate more on that or give us a link?

i'm still trying to find my cactus book. i borrowed it from the school library, misplaced it and ended up paying $60 for it os it's mine when i find it. it has a whole chapter didicated to studied on the chemistry of pigments, defensive alkaloids and thier evolutions as understood at the time of it's writing. some of it may be mere speculation, but much of it is based on waht is known about the plant's synthesis of said chemicals, so it may be somewaht helpful.

The big problem with plants is that it's hard to come up with a general rule for all plants....

I'm sure there may be some instances where chlorophyll and alkaloid content correllate and there's probably some where not.

There's alkaloids in other parts of the plants where there's no chlorophyll (the roots). Some alkaloids are cellular materials that are trapped in vacuoles and there's other plants where alkaloids are systemic and travel.

So in all cases chlorophyll levels may not be directly associated. If a healthy plant is nice and green then it has lots of chlorophyll and is metabaolizing (anabolism + catabolism) at a good rate thus producing it's own food through photosynthesis and producing wastes and by-products through anabolism and catabolism.

So i'm sure smoking a yellowed salvia leave may not be as strong as smoking a nice green one, but the relationship you think exists may not be what you think. I think it has to do with plant health in general more than the amount of chlorophyll present, because the amount of chlorophyll present is also a function of it's health.

But remember there's always exceptions. Just don't go by any hard and fast rules.

Just my two cents.

On a slightly different note, I have discovered that you can actually see the mescaline in these types of cactus as a milky crystaline sort of shiftiness under the epidermis of the plant. You can see when it forms and disappears. And no I'm not tripping. It's pretty obvious, especially on large plants. Check it out. It seems that the mesc. concentrates more near the top or new growing area of the cacti.

eve69: what do you mean, macroscopically? you're tripping dude. stop biting the cacti! =)

neuro: i am referring more to the alkaloids that occur where there's clorophyl.
i forgot there are many roots or other parts of different plants used for different purposes.
and i agree with you, no rule of thumb, always exceptions, mid terms, unstable alkaloid producers...

concrete: it would be very cool if you could find your book and elaborate a little on it!

thanks fellows!

well plants dotn make alkaloids from special cells.(at least most) so they are related to soem metobolic proccess. wether it comes dirrectly from cloroplasts or somewhere else in a cycle i dont know.

indeed, I agree

cloroplasts(not chlorophyll) might be very much involved in alkaloids and other secondary metabolites productions .

well, chlorophyll in some extent too ...
