most amazingest contam ever
    #2142739 - 11/28/03 07:13 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I've been doing a lot of cloning of wild specimens onto agar recently, and as you'd expect have experienced a whole range of contams as well as successes.  But this one on MYPA was just too spectacular to throw away.

(under binocular microscope)

My only thought is that it must be a myxomycete of some description.  It appears to be feeding on an underlying layer of bacteria.  I might try to cultivate it intentionally - anyone want some???

Can you do a 1000X slide/coverslip photo by chance? I've seen Bacillus take on some wierd morphs before, some of the most amazing colonies. Very nice pic!

OK, i will try tomorrow. I'm afraid however that putting a coverslip on it is just going to squish it into an icky mushy mess, especially if we are going for 1000x oil immersion... but we might find a few spores or something

One of the blobs is doing something really weird in the past few hours, losing most of its spaghetti coil thingies and spreading out in a big smooth purple mat over the dish with a few fat 'veins' ... i reckon its a slime mould, but then i've never seen these weird morphs of Bacillus...

hehe geiger indeed. the weirdest response so far has been my labmate. she said "aww, it's so cute" , I think she's been looking at too much pond scum of late

I think the original pic was coolest - there are still some bits of the contam colony that are showing that 'spaghetti' morphology, will try to get more pics of that soon
