Cardboard Spawn
    #21426673 - 03/18/15 12:50 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I recently learned about using the lower stem of cubes to create spawn on corrugated cardboard and I wanted to share this funny occurrence that happened in one of my jars.

1. Is that shredded cardboard?
2. How did you inoculate?
3. What are them temperatures?
4. How long from inoculate to fruits?
5. How did you prep your cardboard?
6. Do you have a gas exchange hole in the jar?

Note: Cardboard is contam resistant and your jar appears fully colonized. Colonized spawn is contam resistant. Open you jar, have good lighting, focus your camera with a good background, and proceed to take a better picture.

1. This is the middle part of cardboard when you rip the the smooth skin of both outer layers from a box. Corrugated cardboard is what I understand it to be called.
2. When I harvested my cubes from a standard pf tek cake I snipped the last 1/4 inch of the stem off(where the mycelium was attached to the cake) and placed between two small and sterilized corrugated cardboard pieces that are lightly wet.
3. This process is not to achieve fruits in the current state that is why it is such a funny occurrence. The mushroom is popping off the stem that is creating the mycelium in the cardboard. I have inoculated 3 brf jars this month from the cardboard with interesting results. My first jar I mistakenly did not sterilize the cardboard and of coarse am having issues, but the other two are half colonized.
4. I wet a few pieces then put in a bowl and started at one minute, repeat at lower time til dry. Then I wet again and placed it back in for thirty so it was still moist.
5. Yes 3 holes with micro pore over holes.

So far b+ definitely, and possibly Fiji. After a few flushes I got lazy with labeling some of them.

Yeah these were experiments so they did not receive my rare and coveted mason jars. I almost made that joke but thought it would be too cheesy, zing!

How soon did you take the picture of the inoculated jar after you knocked it up?

Not sure give me a minute to look at other method jars I inoculated at the same time real quick. Like I wrote before I was not planning on it working so I was lax in my labeling of them.

3/5 so 15 days now the picture was taken today. I also have a contaminated cardboard specimen as well, would you like me to post the failing jar too?

You can! It would be good for learning purposes, especially when people choose to follow this so they have notes to compare by. That's how I see it at least.

Looks like some awesome and aggressive growth. Is there contaminated portions in the bag with clean mycelium? It's acting like a huge agar I guess. This is neat.

This is a contaminated jar from the same batch. This one even had more growth than the healthy jar before it showed signs of contamination.

Putting this one in the window today, crossing my fingers. I have seen this race b+ eat stuff before if it was happy myc, lions mane too. The sun seems to help.

I really was not trying to put something out there yet til the experiment was done. I really was just posting about the way the stem I had placed between the cardboard pieces had sprung a mushroom. This is just pf tek formula of Verm and brf with a slit of cardboard that I spawned with the mycelium rich lower stem. I guess I should think before I POST. If there is enough interest I would gladly make a write up once I get some actual fruits.

Please try at your own risk!!!

OK to the other question about the bag, No not that I can see. That bag is actually the first time I tried this with the stems so I have changed my methods to a bottle since then to incubate them as I was worried about contams from it touching the side of the bag. That is why I still have not placed it in a substrate yet. I might save that bag for my outside garden grow.
One of the serious problems in my opinion about this method is the fact that after I take my jars out of the pressure cooker I have to open the jar to place the board in. So there are serious drawbacks to this method. I just like the fact I can spore print and get I guess you could say a clone? from the base of the stem of the mushrooms in the cluster.
