A healthy gut.

After years of abusing myself, eating junk, starving myself, 4 day amphetamine binges, gallons of beer, and multiple chemicals, i grew up and learned to appreciate myself.
Now at 32 i look back with disgust at how i treated myself and i worry about the damage i've caused already.
What are some good healthy food and drinks i can add into my diet to promote health and reduce the risk of bowel cancer and other problems ?
Thanks !

Probiotics my friend! I brew sauerkraut and Kombucha. Kombucha starter cultures can be somewhat difficult to find (in my location at least), but homemade sauerkraut is very easy to do. For sauerkraut you really just need salt, cabbage, and time (about 4 weeks at least for small mason jar batches). If you wanna make a little bit just to give it a try, check out this link for easy instructions: http://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-easy-homemade-sauerkraut-in-a-mason-jar-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-193124

Thanks, i'll look into probiotics a bit more. I remember when they first became popular, i tried the yoghurts and they gave me gas and stomach cramps so i've been put off them ever since. I know there's many different types these days.
They sell sauerkraut at the supermarket. It looks like a taste i will have to acquire. I have never tried it before.
Thanks everyone.

Personally yogurt, kombucha, kefir, most sauerkrauts & kimchi's irritate my stomah; so I use the probiotic capsules.
As far as probiotic foods, the one that I have been able to handle is a fermented beet/ginger mixture made by some company called Farmhouse Ferments, or something like that.

All of the probiotic foods are fantastic!
I will also advocate for kefir and kombucha.
I had real gut problems for many years which caused me to have extreme cause build up. I became known for my rank and frequent farts amongst friends, workmates, family, etc. You got get the point.
When i started going to school again I found that sitting through 4 hour classes would leave my stomach filling with gas and cause me severe abdominal pain... I went to the Dr. and was tested for celiac, lactose intolerance and had a variety of urine/blood/stool samples taken and nothing came up. I'd taken the liquid probiotics available at the health food stores, and the Dr. prescribed a couple months worth of a prescription probiotic (very expensive) to no avail.
I then got turned onto Kefir and it really helped clear our my system when i first started it. I've been on it for probably over a year now, and it helps alot - although my symptoms are greatly diminished, they do flare up occasionally, less severe than in the past though. I do notice my symptoms increase when I stop taking it for 3+ days inbetween batches (if i've fallen out of schedule.) I should also say, my partner was brewing Kombucha around the same time, so that may have had an impact as well (+ it tastes way better.)
What I believe happened in my case was self prescribing OTC broad spectrum antibiotics after a particularly long lasting food poisoning in South America. Taking a broad spectrum antibiotic leaves opportunistic organisms (with resistance) the ability to recolonize your gut without competition. I believe this is what happened to me, and in theory taking the kefir is repopulating my gut with a healthy diversity which will either balance or displace the nasties.
Kefir grains are available for low cost, or often free through craigslist or other online networks.

I got some Multibionta tablets for now. I'll see how they go. I have some tenderness in my lower gut that seems to come and go. My diet's pretty healthy but a bit bland sometimes if i'm losing weight. I'm trying to take a healthier approach from here on it. No more junk for me !
I'll look into probiotic foods. Thanks everyone !

We are a generation built of formula instead of mother's milk and antibiotics for ALL the things.
Is it any surprise that digestive issues are rampant???

I was taught how to look after myself but to appreciate myself is another matter. I feel somewhat a victim of culture. I find pleasure now in being healthy rather than decadence, well except for the odd drug binge but they can be good for the spirit. I hope i escaped my youth without doing too much damage.

If you do try incorporating sauekraut into your diet and want the benefits of probiotics, be sure to buy one that hasn't been pasteurized.
Also, be aware of the "die off" reaction that can occur when taking probiotics (pill or food form). It will make you have to go to the bathroom very very badly. This happened to me a couple times
I believe it usually goes away after you have colonized your gut with the beneficial bacteria, at least it has gone away for me.

I think die off is only from candida, and therefore won't happen to everyone. Although when I did start the kefir I did have an adjustment period during which time my stool changed. The first few times required "urgent" trips to the bathroom.

While die-off reaction is most commonly used to describe candida die-off, it can refer to die off of many different types of yeasts, bacteria, fungi etc.
http://bodywisdomnutrition.com/what-is-a-die-off-reaction/ (Not sure how reputable the source is, but some interesting info on Die-off and probiotics)

good on ya dude
not to hijack but i used to binge and make myself throw up, starve myself, smoke, exercise intensely on and off..
and shit, i actually looked good, i was young, i played high level sport..
yet i'd avoid the beach each summer, wore baggy clothes, wouldnt want to go out like i was haunted everywhere by invisible ghosts
i felt like shit for a large number of legitimate reasons for a stupid amount of time.
now i eat what i want and go to the beach and brandish my stupid torso to the world cos fuck it it's not worth the anguish..

A big part of having a healthy gut is not putting toxins INTO your body. I'd try cutting out grains from your diet - it does wonders for the gut health. Helps with leaky gut, ulcers, heartburn - the lot.

FYI - This is a controversial idea.

I like quick convenient food since i try and eat 5 times a day. I switched to using rice noodles just in case they were gentler on the system. I eat a lot of chicken with noodles, and home made curries with chicken. Omelettes and oats to fill in the gaps.
I used to have a horrible diet. I was skinny growing up and binged on junk food when i had it then starved for large parts of the day.
