Doctors and scientists doing lsd...
    #21424924 - 03/17/15 11:50 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone think science and medicine could benefit from people in the field exploring options on psychedelics?

Not a joke but maybe it could help with some advancements.  Steve Jobs said taking acid was one of the most important things he did in his life.

There is no benefit to looking further into psychedelics. They are just a waste of time.

I'm a scientist. I think psychedelics have been useful in nurturing my creativity. I hang out with a lot of scientists/physicians and I would say that the ones that I know that have used psychedelics tend to be more creative. That said, I know some really brilliant people that don't touch drugs. They happen to be abstract thinkers all on their own. I kind of envy those that have those intrinsic capabilities.

Without question... Arguably the most important discovery of the 20th century was made all thanks to LSD. Francis Crick deduced the double helix structure of DNA while under the influence of LSD. He basically hit a brick wall while trying to figure it out and started using small amounts of acid as a "thinking tool" which , lo and behold, proved entirely fruitful.

Psychologists in the '50s were reporting amazing breakthroughs in combating alcoholism. On a single dose session, something like 40-50% of patients were practically cured of their addiction. Results like this were (and essentially are still) unheard of. They were so excited about LSD... raving and dreaming up the possibilities of what it could potentially do for mental health in general.

Then, of course, it was made illegal and all scientific research on psychedelics stopped. Attempting to study psychedelics even to this day is potentially career suicide...

Interest has slowly been building once again in the scientific community, thankfully.... Let's hope some of these scientists grow a bigger pair and do the research despite the rigid government restrictions that are in place!

I believe its important to have a professional objective view from both sides of the fence. I dont believe everybody should take psychedelics, but I believe everybody should have the option.

I think it would be hugely beneficial. Infact some of the early LSD study's with architects and scientists ended with a shit ton of patents being issued

I am finishing my Ph.D. studies in a technical field and what got me to psychedelics was the work of Dr. James Fadiman with scientist regarding creativity and problem solving. I have no previous illegal drug use, apart from testing weed once many years ago but never used it since.

Here is some information regarding Fadiman's work:
"Selective Enhancement of Specific Capacities Through Psychedelic Training" (found an online version here: http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/lsd/harman.htm). This is an overview of another publication "Psychedelic Agents in Creative Problem-Solving: A Pilot Study", in Psychedelic Reports 19, 211-27, 1966.

Here is a documentary where Dr. Fadiman speaks about this experiment 18:40-20:50 and he appears in here and there throughout the documentary.

Also, here I found an interview with Kary Mullis and his LSD experience.

Not to say that LSD can't be helpful in such a way, but that strikes me as an urban legend and most of what I turned up supports the idea that it probably is.

And even if he had access to LSD back then and was taking it while researching, "all thanks to" is a huge exaggeration. Lots of scientists researching and taking x-rays and whatnot for thousands of hours led to that discovery.

A better case is Kary Mullis, who admitted to LSD helping him come up with the polymerase chain reaction technique, but then he went on to be a nutjob later so...

I linked to the video with Kary Mullis talking about his LSD experience in my previous post. Also, most of the great scientists are on the border being nutjobs.

I also agree that it is not entirely fair giving all credit to LSD. From my experience, what psychedelics do is giving rise to seeing new relations between different data/information/knowledge that the individual already have. Even Kary Mullis explained that the stuff he got the Nobel Prize for he finalized after his experimentation with LSD. But what LSD gave him was deeper insight to molecular structure.

LSD didn't allow him to deduce the structure. Images of the structure by Rosalind Franklin did. He's full of shit.

My friends dad is a scientist, and he at did a lot of LSD and psychedelics in general in his early years... I can't say what it did in terms of his scientific career, but hes a smart dude and doesn't exactly think 'inside' the box. Honestly their influence probably shows up more in his hobbies than his job.

Well a Doc Brown nutjob is not the same as an AIDS-denier nutjob, but yeah I guess there are a lot of them:laugh:

He is well not denying AIDS? As I understand it he could not find a reliable source that shows HIV-positive causing AIDS. Did not looked too much into it, but there seems to be numerous scientists that are criticizing Dr. Gallo.

I think to be a good scientist you need to be crazy to a certain degree.:crazy2:

It's already been studied and proven, the answer is yes at low doses. (I don't recall if they even tried higher ones)
