Taste is a pretty good way to tell them apart. Take a little bite, move it around your mouth, and then spit it out. Gyms are usually extremely bitter while Galerina are not.

Caustic soda or NaOH is sodium hydroxide and KOH is potassium hydroxide

Potassium Hydroxide is KOH. KOH can help identify some fungi, but I don't think it will help here.

NOH is not potassium, it is quite an important difference. The correct nomenclature for potassium hydroxide is KOH, not NOH. NOH is nothing - it's wrong.

I was also wondering what NOH was and was searching online like a noob!!
I use them both NaOH and KOH and I do not see any major difference either to rehydrate dry specimens or to clean / wash congo-red stained specimens or to mount. Nevertheless, for some reason or other, most books quote KOH so I think there should be a slight advantage. Maybe, NaOH is less stable to weathering/standing or it might form deposits. Also badly stoppered NaOH makes a mess (dunnot know KOH)as it reacts with atmospheric Carbon Dioxide
Probably other members will give you better answers, but there are my words from my little experience.

Neither Galerina nor Gymnopilus react much with strong bases.
Taste is a good way, though there are a few Gymnopilus species that are not bitter, and not everyone can taste the bitter chemical.
It is fine to taste Galerina as long as you don't eat any. Galerina tastes very mild.
Cap texture is a good thing to look at, Galerinas have a smooth cap.
Most of the active Gymnopilus species are quite a bit larger than the largest Galerina.
Both NaOH and KOH pull carbon dioxide out of the air and make insoluable Sodium / Potassium carbonte crystals, making older solutions look cloudy.
They both work about the same for mycological purposes, but it is best to use KOH since that is what most of the other mycologists use.

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/macrochemicals.html
his pages almost always include reactions to the various tests even if negative.
also, gyms are spore-quantity-ridiculous. they coat themselves in it sometimes. galerina not so much?
