bleach pasteurization?
    #2142396 - 11/28/03 05:03 PM (13 years, 15 days ago)

I thought I'd seen something on bleach pasteurization before, but can't seem to find it now.

basically I'm looking for a tek on how to pasteurize straw with bleach and water, rather than hot water. Maybe pasteurize isn't the right word, but I want to prepare the straw for spawning.

Thanks!

From "Lana's" post: "Hypochlorite treatment:
Add 4 cups of household bleach solution to 45 gals. water to prepare a disinfectant solution that works about as well as lime water and is very economical. Immersion time and limitations are as for lime water. All the straw must be immersed at once. Serial treatment of a number of batches does not work well as the hypochlorite becomes depleted."

I dont know, but, something about it sounds weird. I'd be scared of ingesting any bleach.

I do remember seeing something on it a while back ago. Hippie3 stated that there is no harm done, because the mycelium will break down the bleach into unharmful byproducts.

It sounds to me like a modified version of the old Hydrogen Peroxide soaking method, but i might expect peroxide to work better.... of course, i'm no expert, and once again, the mycelium breaks it down... into hydrogen and oxygen, being that those are the two compnenets... heh heh

I think hypochlorite is more effective than H2O2... my experience so far.
by the time the shrooms are pinning the bleach smell is gone.

Yes, bleach pasturizing is done without the use of heat.

I've read and heard lost about the infamous H2o2 pasturization methods but I just don't see it.

H2o2 breaks down rather quickly.  The reason H2o2 comes in brown bottles is becuase the oxygen seperates from the hydrogen when UV light is introduced.

Some use H2o2 and love it.  All depends on your taste
