Corn stalks for sub
    #21421850 - 03/17/15 05:06 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone used or heard of using corn stalks for sub? I have a ton in my garden and thought instead of mixing my Hpoo with straw, why not use corn stalks.

I bet if you shred them up enough and pasteurize them it would work great.

Corn stalks work like straw, but corn cobs are even better.  Shred up the corn cobs and use as substrate, but be sure to get all the kernels off first, or they'll contaminate before you can get your first flush.

Yea man thats what I was thinking. I tried dried oak leaves and the mycelium refused to colonize it they went around it and found the poo and straw instead, it was quite interesting.

leaves stay wet and damp all fall and I rarely see molds on them. I wonder why but that's why they wouldn't be my first substrate choice. you leave plant husks out and wet and they mold like a motherfucker.

I'm like a savant with the shroomery search engine.

Good call dude, now that you say that, thats exactly right I never see mold on leaves but corn stalks get all cover in mold. I wonder if its acid or something in the leaves that makes it like that.

I just hacked up 6 corn stalks with my tomahawk then stuck them in my blender, and this is what they look like. Seems like its gonna kick ass.

Nice. Stamets highly recommends corncobs for oysters, too.
