Casing Question
    #2142116 - 11/28/03 02:15 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I have 4 pints of colonized birdseed and I'm ready to case. I plan on using 60/40 coir/verm for the casing layer, but I was just wondering if you can mix the casing with the substrate rather than putting the substrate layer down and then the casing layer on top. I figure if I do mix the two, I would just put down about a half inch of coir/verm on top of the coir/verm/substrate mix so when I see mycelium poking through I could assume what's below is colonized. Pros and cons? Opinions? Experiences?

Thanks guys!

You could mix it with a little vermiculite or something, but don't go crazy. This isn't nessecary, though -- only if you think it needs to be more airy and hold more water. You still need a fluffy moist layer of only casing on the top, though, of course.

since you have come this far using a whole grain, you might also want to think about saving 1 jar to do g2g with.

I don't have a flowhood. Is it still possible to do a g2g without one? A friend has tried before, but contams hit him hard.

You could make a glovebox....

Very true. That didn't even come to mind.

Alright, well, since it is unnecessary to mix the substrate with the casing mixture, I'm just going to go about casing the normal way. I also will be saving a pint jar for some g2g transfers. I do, however, have one more question. Should one compact the substrate before adding the casing layer or should it be somewhat fluffy and canyon-like?

Thanks again!

that would defeat the purpose of a casing layer. A casing layer should be non-nutritive. You can mix some sterile verm with the substrate if you want, but you would still have to apply a casing layer.

I do g2g transfers all the time and I don't use a glovebox. Just be very clean, know what you do and work fast. I do have some contams from time to time but it's below 10%.

.fs.

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/24330, there is a good grain to grain method without using a glovebox, courtesy of automan
