10 M NaOH down the drain?

Hey -- you think I could throw 10 M NaOH down the drain to use as Drain-O, or is this too strong and will oxidize the pipes? The pipes are made of copper and they're old.... But if I chased it with water it would be ok, right?
I just ask because I'm cleaning and I have a bottle of 10 M NaOH lying around that I don't need, but no Drain-O.
Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I figured it's science related.
Thanks

I've used pure NaoH to clean my drains before. i just put it in a cup of water then dropped it down. wait for 10 mintues for it to unclog the pipes then wash with warm water. just dont wash any acid down the sink anytime soon

I would think that you'd want to follow it with an acid. Not doing so would leave a residue of corrosive material in the pipe which could damage it.
If you poured a cup or three of vinegar down the drain awhile later, it would neutralize the NaOH and produce sodium acetate, which is water soluble and harmless.

A reaction between a strong acid and strong base can be quite vigorous and generate lots of heat, it could also produce nasty fumes depending on the exact chems involved. For example, adding conc. ntiric acid to sodium hydroxide can be extremely dangerous. It's best to dilute everything with lots of water.
When I use NaOH for unblocking pipes I normally just pour some powder down the plughole, wait for a while and then turn the water on and leave it running.

Hell, the NaOH is gonna cause heat just eating thru the blockage...water is key. After a good rinse, vinegar wouldn't be a bad idea tho.

I wouldn't pour any corrosive chemicals down my pipes, even draino. You can buy little plastic "snakes" at most hardware stores that work great for unclogging drains and won't affect the life of your precious plumbing.
