Marriage is a legal institution, not a religious one. A contract parties. I do not think the government should be involved in it at all except to reconcile dissolution disputes related to assets. It should not be recognized in the tax code at all. Who you fuck is none of the government's damn business and I abhor social engineering through government coercion.
If you want to encourage marriage get rid of welfare.

First off, marriage is a legal bond that comes with legal benefits in America. Therefore it cannot be defined by religion. If it's gonna be a religious thing that's fine, but then all of the legal benefits that come along with it need to be abolished. Can't have it both ways. Second of all, your marriage failed. Therefore you failed at one of your sacred sacraments. How do you sleep at night knowing this?

I think the trouble was that the title didn't make it clear that you were thinking about marriage in strictly the catholic/christian sense. People are treating it as a general discussion and they think that you're treating the religious view as an argument against gay marriage. I assume you have no problem with gay marriage as a general thing that happens in life?
It's kind of funny where I live. Gay marriage got legalized a little while ago in my state, so all the gay couples that I know have been waiting for it for forever, and as a result they've tested their relationships really well, and the gay marriages are some of the most functional marriages I'v ever seen. On the other hand a bunch of teenagers are always getting knocked up and forced into weddings by their parents, and those are among the worst marriages I've seen. All in all I've got to hand the trophy to gay marriages over strait marriages. So far they're winning good marriage competition. I have yet to hear about a shotgun gay-wedding.
