User-created idea

Say now, Ythan, it'd be cool if you had the option to make user-created forums publicly viewable if you wanted. I understand they are officially separate from the site and all, so you might not necessarily want any random topic forum to be seen without logging in, but if so, you could make it so when you clicked a box or button it could file a PM to you or Geo to approve for public view status or not, or something like that. What say you?

Good idea.
Not to thread-Jack, but it would be nice of they worked on the opposite aspects too, like making the invite-only UC forums more secure, by making the threads created in them not viewable by non-invited users. How it is now they can't see the forum index, but can view any thread they can find a link to or whatever, and the links are all over, in users post history, on the best posts page, and even in the active topics list.

Hey Ythan,et al, if you the blow the whistle in a user-created forum it should notify the mods of that forum rather than the staff of the main forums, doesn't really make sense otherwise as they don't moderate user-created forums unless they're assigned as mods in the user-created forums anyway.

Haha, I saw one once a while back, during a darker time. I don't think I've seen one since I made the MFWMRWT forum though

The problem with this suggestion is that there is no way of knowing why the user blew the whistle on that particular post. If a post is against sitewide rules, a mod should get the notification so that he/she can remove the offending content. It'd be nice to be able to trust UC mods to enforce the rule against sourcing, for instance, but not every UC mod is going to give a shit.

What do you mean? They would put the reason why into the comment box like normal. As for the rest of your comment:

They aren't actively managed by the Shroomery, but the Shroomery is still legally liable if, for instance, a user-created forum was being used to buy/sell/trade illegal substances. As a result, the site should enforce the sitewide rules in those fora.

Alright. Seems like the rules in general on UC's change depending on who you're talking to though.
Anyway, then I propose a simple checkbox option to send the notification to either that UC's mods, or below it an option to send it sitewide for things like you mentioned.

You're right, the UCs have largely flown under the radar, but lately there has been more discussions about them among the staff. I'd expect that eventually there will be some definitive policies put in place about them.
Your idea of a user being able to direct a notification isn't all that complicated. It sounds workable at first glance.

Or do any receive it at all?
I don't know. I've never seen a notification from a user-created forum.

That would be cool if they did. Took me over a year to get Andrew to fix it just so you could delete threads again. They're a good idea though and I appreciate them. On one hand, it cuts down on disciplinary bullshit the staff has to deal with, but as already demonstrated, it also creates thriving sub-communities that create and maintain their own traffic. Free juice for less work. If the UC's I frequent weren't here anymore, for example, I'd most likely not visit the site very often these days because they can focus on my specific interests so keenly and provide a tailored environment for me.
And like I proposed above, if a UC forum was popular enough the admins could consider making them publicly viewable if the forum creator wanted to, or maybe even an official forum.
*I tested the whistle out before I made that post about it. No mods in my UC forum received it, and I asked any nomal site moderators who recieved it to forward it to the admins.
ps- I'd be interested to see how much total site traffic the UC's constitute. I'm sure it's fairly low since they're not even public, but I've noticed a lot of growth.

sorry for the thread jack, i blew the whislte and nobody has responded though again it did show up as a notification in my pm's so maybe it's just mods that are invited(real mods), when i first made my user created it always said entire staff listed as mods...that's gone now

So, in other words, if there are no site mods listed as forum mods, the notifications go literally nowhere.
That's a problem, and that needs to get fixed.

Yes, if no normal site staff got my test notification yesterday or cronicr's today, then that seems to be the case. The UC forum mods in my forum did not receive anything, and I had confirmed it yesterday before making the post about it.

Yeah, that'd be cool, most things wouldn't need intervention from the actual staff, some things like sourcing and death threats may though.Quote:

Yeah, that could definitely cause some problems, I'm sure if someone tells an admin it'll be changed asap.
