WBS TEK - >?
    #21414402 - 03/16/15 01:31 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17252080/fpart/1/vc/1

The tek listed above states he uses coffee for the soak and adds gypsum.

1. Why coffee and can i just use normal water instead? (he said it was already soaked coffee i.e it has to be weaker)
2. What is gypsum?

I have read a fair few WBS teks and am a little confused....

So far they seem to say:

1. Get WBS.
2. rise/clean WBS until water runs clear
3. Soak for 24 hours
4. put into pot with water, simmer for 10 minutes
5. Strain until outside of WBS is dry
6. add to container, PC them.
7. inoculate.

Am i missing anything?

You don't have to use coffee , plain water if you want. And gypsum is used so the grains don't stick together as bad. I just bust up a small piece of drywall and crush it into powder.

You can just toss a tablespoon of coffee grounds into your simmer water. Adds nitrogen.

id listen to frank. i follow his tek and its working great.  follow his instructions and everything will be all right.  gypsum is drywall or is used for garden soil.  ur on the right track.  i got 12 jars of wbs going right now from franks tek.

Look into sourcing some cheap gypsum one way or another because it makes an amazing substrate ingredient.

you don't need the simmer. I do not rinse wbs until clear water, I give it one, maybe two rinses and that is plenty.

about to load up 20lbs right now

happy preping :bigblunt:

I am still unclear about the gypsum - i have no idea how much i am supposed to add or where approximately i am supposed to get it? are there any other more normal substitutes i could use?

Its the stuff in drywall(gypsum board). I bought a piece at Lowes (2'x2') for like $5 and it will last for years for me. I add about 1/4 cup for 7 quart jars soak water.

yeah it is drywall, or you can use garden gypsum (poweder or pellets), but that stuff is repackaged drywall scraps!
Bagged is easier because you don't have to break it up.
I use about a large handful (~1/3 cup) to soak 20lbs. It's only to add trace minerals aka myc food, it is not exact.
as for other additives I add brewed coffee to my soak as well (~2 cups per 20lb soak).

Some don't bother with this because they think growth is not increased by a large margin
while others do use additives because they think the myc gets stronger on a more diverse diet.

You have to find what works for you. If you have coffee to spare toss it in, if you happen to go to a garden store maybe get some gypsum that will last years for like $10. Or don't use anything. All are answers.

You can still kick some ass without coffee and gypsum, but I include them in every grow personally. The tub in my signatures was just pure wbs spawned to coir/verm. That's it.

Coffee grounds/gypsum in the simmer water and gypsum in my bulk substrates.

Some people are telling me i can skip the simmer and just hydrate (soak?) instead......
Should i still add in the coffee grounds?

If you don't simmer, then start your soak with boiling water.

I've heard too much can stunt growth, but then again I've seen people like Muda spawn grain to basically pure coffee subs with success.

I've always had great results with coffee. This topic of conversation is actually reminding me of why my current batch of jars is not to my standard or liking as far as growth rate.

Didn't use coffee.
