1 Week After Inoculation

1 Week ago - Inoculated 22 Pint jars with B+ strain - Sterilized Rye grass seed mixture used 4 Days ago - Loosened substrate, no sign of mycelium growth Today - Loosened substrate, multiple jars showing signs of mycelium growth in several areas throughout. Although there was one jar found where a patch of the substrate was stuck to the jar in the bottom corner, very hardened already as far as I could tell, and there was an obvious blueish colored mold forming slightly in the patch. Contaminated jar removed from chamber and discarded properly. Pictures of the full inoculation chamber with all 22 jars and one of a jar of inoculated substrate close up, no other photos have been taken since then. This is my first attempt at cultivating a mushroom culture so I am just starting out and I definitely encourage tips, comments, suggestions, and any questions you may have. I will be keeping everybody on the message board updated and replying on my posts too.
Thanks Everyone!

When you say "loosened substrate" does that mean you're shaking them? This is kind of an unorthodox first grow ha ha but take the foil off so the jars can get better gas exchange.

What an intense way to get started! People usually do PF tek first with brown rice flour.
The foil should be taken off, as you want your filters to dry ASAP if you want them to be of any use. Why? cause water can give contams safe passage through filters, whereas dry filters just work as they should. And yeah you need that gas exchange too.
What kind of lids are you using, in terms of filters? Polyfill works well and is very cheap (pillow stuffing). Otherwise micropore tape can work, synthetic filter discs...
I'm assuming you inoculated using a syringe. Did you inject through a self healing injection port (like RTV silicone) or some other safe way?
Did you remember to get your needle red hot before every injection?
When you say "loosened substrate" I hope you don't mean that you're shaking the poor things! We only shake after about 20-30% colonization, and another shake around 85% is also good. If you shake too often, you just break up the mycelium's progress and it can weaken it enough to allow contaminants to win the race. Plus it'll take forever to colonize fully if you're constantly shaking.
This hobby is a patience game. You'll find yourself waiting about a week sometimes with multispore inoculation (especially if your house is colder than 70F) before seeing any germination. Just be patient and keep your mycelium happy and healthy.

Yeah the jars have been shaken twice since the first day of inoculation. I definitely so your point of not shaking the jars so often Junior Fungus I will practice at this game of paitence from now on. I did not want to do the cake method so I did this method instead. The lids are loosened and have a hole popped in them, so thats why i left the foil on but I will be sure to remove them.

So you have no filter on your lids except the foil with a hole in the lid?

You just poked a small hole in each lid and figured it would be ok? Dude... You're doing grain, not PF tek. With Pf tek you can have those holes cause your dry verm layer acts as a filter. With grain spawn like you're doing, you NEED a filter in that hole! We usually make the hole 5/16 or 1/4" wide, and stuff it with polyfill or other filters I've mentioned. At this point, I would run to the pharmacy and buy micropore tape to cover the holes, but you might be fucked... With the holes you made, contams could easily creep in, and your foil isnt doing shit about it.
Micropore tape looks like this
They call it Gentle paper, but at the back it'll say "hospital name: micropore tape" or something to that effect.
Just to be clear, you kinda messed up these jars man. Next time, make sure you have a filter with each hole. All you can do with these 22 jars is try to salvage them using micropore tape over the holes and hoping for the best. You'll more than likely have a lot of them get contaminated. Watch out for green, yellow, pink, black, and well you should read up on contams. Theres a whole section of this site called the contamination forum, and you should do some reading.

I've done containers with Pc-able plastic ware and 2 layers of foil, lift the second layer inject, and cover again. It works fine. If it's only holes just make sure to keep the foil on. It'll work but it's not ideal.
