Poll: When someone asks you to, "tell them I said hi," do you do it? 2

I was wondering what other people think about this..
I'm not even sure, maybe it's a regional thing but when you're talking to one person and you mention that you're going to see someone else are you ever asked to, "tell them I said hi?"
It seems like such a strange idea to me and seldom if ever do I actually say, "so and so says hi!"
It's just awkward to bring up; when I'm visiting with someone I'm never in the mood to offer a vicarious greeting. If someone asks me to do this I usually say yeah sure then feel guilty about not following through.
It's like, if you want to say hi just call them and say hi, why do you want me to do it?
Anyway, I'm just pondering the psychology behind this and wondering what you guys think. Are you a big fan of the vicarious hi or does everyone feel the same way that I do?

Yes, but its annoying. I can't say no when someone asks me to say hi to someone, and then I don't want to fall back on my promise. Granted, very often I just forget to follow through because of how pointless it is.

I usually just completely forget about it too.
I guess it's a way for someone to feel like they're connecting with someone else without having to put in any of the leg work.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels strange about this custom.

I always try and say hi for a person if they ask me to. It's a simple way to let someone know that someone else has them in their thoughts/hearts.
How hard is it to say "I was talking to so and so earlier, they said Hi"

i do, but i dont make it a point, if i am conversing and i suddenly remember, and feel it is the right time to bring it up, i will do so, but if i forget then i forget, no biggie. i just see it as good manners i guess or some shit when people ask me this, or if i ask them. it's like saying hello in Japanese.

It isn't, but if they wanted to say hi they should stop being antisocial and do it on their own.

You're right, it is really easy to do and that's part of the reason why I'm trying to figure out why I don't like doing it.
It seems like an in-road to a pre-programmed conversation. From there you talk about the person and discuss their life, the status of their relationship with you and others, etc. I don't really like talking about people who aren't present.
Talking about people just feels like a dirty habit to me. It often seems to lead to gossip and criticism of that person, so I just try to avoid the whole topic of "other people."
This is kind of a negative view, it is possible to talk about others in a favorable light of course.
We just end up spending so much time in our own heads that when I do conversate I want to talk about "bigger" things like passions, ideas, aspirations.

No, they just didn't really think of that person until they were brought into the conversation. To me it seems like they didn't really want to say hi to them all that much, which is what I was hinting at.
If I have to say hi for you then you're probably not all that close to the person.

I understand that as well. But sometimes people lose ways of communications. I have a buddy who never has a working phone. I recently ran into a mutual friend of ours that neither of us had seen for around 3 years. I talked to him for a few and he told me to tell our friend that he said hi. And the next time I saw him I told him. It was a month later.
It's not always an anti-social thing.

Sometimes I do, it's not like that person you're supposed tell "hi" is going to mention it to the other person. I know that's not the point and people just want to be thought of, which is why I do it more now.

True. That's not quite the same as the standard 'say hi' for me. In that case I probably would too, since that person has seemingly dropped off the planet. If it's someone we both could easily get a hold of I usually don't though.
