A small start down a new path
    #21389106 - 03/10/15 08:06 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everyone,

I've trolled around here for the last few months and made a few posts or so. I made a flow hood, and shared the build (it works great btw). But I wanted to share with you what I've got going on.

I work in the heart of Cambridge in biotech, and have been doing process development for 2.5 years now. I've moved up, but already at a young age I'm tired of corporate life and the thought of always having a boss. I did a lot of soul searching, and the happiest I've been in life was when I was growing stuff (particularly in college). Biotech is cool and all, and I totally dig molecular biology. If I kept at it, I would have a solid career potentially within the next 7 years. But, I'd never make more than $80,000 without a masters, and I don't know if I feel that committed to the field. That, and all the nasty chemicals and lab hazards. I've already had my fair share of respiratory lab accidents.. :\

My father owns around 100 acres of prime land down in WV. Sometime in the next year, I'm abandoning ship up here and moving down to live in the family cabin (that I've loved since a kid). It needs some work but its awesome. I'm also going to develop the land into a commercial mushroom and specialty crop farm for a living.

So I thought I should get versed in the ways of substrate handling, production, and renew my aseptic technique skills from college. I have set up my 5'x5'x6.5' secret jardin grow tent, complete with tjernlund 6" inline fan (with phresh muffler) for circulation and digital climate control. I have a duct hooked up partially to my AC unit, which I'm going to put on a timer so I can keep my apartment relatively cool while also cooling my tent. Don't worry about the humidity, I have a beefy ass homemade ~ 30 gallon 6 head ultrasonic humidifier hooked up to a digital humidity controller. The tent is vented on a timer via a 4" inline fan (with muffler) that leads outside (I don't want spores building up in my apartment due to allergies and respiratory issues). EDIT: Re-thinking that just now, I'm going to move the fan to pull off the A/C unit, so that the exhaust can be passive and i can contain the humidity better (since the AC will be on a timer).

The full tent goes up to 95% humidity in a matter of 3-4 minutes from about 38%.

I have 3 36"x15"x74" metal wire shelves, with ~ 20 16"x15"x5" plastic food bins. I still need to rig up some lighting. I'm thinking some super bright LED waterproof strips? maybe 3M above each shelf? (or is that overkill?) I'm growing Agrocybe aegerita (Piopinno, or Black Poplar). I am also growing Lipa's Reishi on agar that I got in a friendly donation.

I also built a 45 gallon incubator using roughnecks, a fishtank heater, a 50 gph water pump, and a digital temperature controller. Probably a bit overboard, but fuck I like home science. :dawerp:

Also can't forget the 24"x24"x6" UV light filtered flow hood I built either with a FKD-12 centrifugal fan. :P

Lastly, I happened to receive my grandfather's (whom I never got to meet) professional 1965 lab microscope (with original handwritten documentation and inspection note). I matched a missing power supply for the light, and it works OK for my needs (isnt great for petri dishes cause of the objectives being too close.

Any constructive criticism or comments are welcome. Pics to follow soon. phone is dead atm.

Sweet man! I would rather be poor and happy then rich and miserable. Growing mushrooms gives us the opportunity to make our own respectable living.

Btw what temps are you dealing with? Doubt you need both an ac and incubator

Looks like you're off to a good start.  You can learn a lot growing small scale in tight spaces.  Every mistake you make is often magnified, so it forces you to focus on the details, sterile tech. etc.  I started growing Pink Oysters in an efficiency apartment and learned a lot of valuable lessons.

Massachusetts ranges anywhere from -10F outside to 95F, so outdoors wise it kinda blows. Indoors, my fiance makes me keep the apartment around 70F (not ideal for fruiting Piopinnos) and not super ideal for mycelium either.

So, the incubator will be around 79-80F (since the internal core temps of the jars will likely be ~ 3-4F higher. At 73F in our apartment, the inside of the glass cabinet they are in sits around 75F. I'm a little OCD about having my conditions set in scientific experiments.

BTW. My cracked corn / verm / gypsum mix is out performing the 100% rye berries by far. But, that could also be because the mycelium was expressing genes for CC from the half pint jar i G2G'd with (which was the exact same recipe).

AC is to be able to reliably drop the tempts to 50-60F in the tent, where it will need to be.

Today I am finishing up my incubator. The marine silicone/sealant took 7 days to fully cure.

Got 6 more quart jars to G2G today, and a quart jar 1/4 filled with residual sub that im gonna do something with.

Moving the 4" inline fan to draw off the AC intake.

The setup is running dry in there at 95% humidity when the 6" inline fan kicks on every 45 minutes for 15 minutes. I think I'll turn that back to not cycle so often. It stays very foggy in the non-air cycling mode. Sitting at 60.6F right now with the AC going not on full blast.

Floor isnt wet either

still temping up to 28C, when I pulled the tub out to check to see if the water heater was working, i noticed that the heater turns on and off every few minutes. Not sure if that is odd behavior, but I have the heater turned up all the way. Perhaps it's a safety feature for the fish that its used for.

I'm in the process of adding plastic sheeting to reduce the cubic footage in the tent needed for me to work in from the total that the humidifier and AC need to cool. Should also help keep the environment a bit cleaner. Basically, I'm sheeting off the shelves and adding flaps that velcro open and shut.

I don't intend the results to be perfect by any means.  Currently, I'm heading out to get a couple small tarps to put under the tent cause i'm concerned of condensation and mold potential underneath the tent on the carpet.

I removed the plastic sheeting after prototyping cause it seemed to be more of a pain in the ass in place than it would have helped.

I just spawned my black poplar to 2 10 lb bags. Next time I think I might go with 4 5 lb bags, but I spawned 2 quarts of CC/gypsum into each bag, and kneeding / inverted thoroughly.

Yes actually.

I have spawned to bulk substrate from grain, which I know can be a bit risky from the increased thermogenesis.

The bulk substrate bags (which were fuel pellets, OMF, and gypsum) colonized but then became kind of lumpy. I'm currently trying to fruit them with a 1/2" casing layer of 50/50 peat moss/vermiculite with 4% hydrated lime. Been cased for ~ 3 days, misting 2 to 3 times a day, and my ultrasonic is the primary means of humidification at the moment, so it should be keeping them nice and moist.

The only times though I can feasible drop the temps near 60F in my apartment though is at night.

I think the main problem/mistake I made was filling the mycobags too much, I opted to try a 10lb bag rather than a 5 lb bag (I have the large mycobags from Out-grow). Next time, I'm going to try 5lb bags, and I'm also going to mix some straw in to see if it helps with the substrate consistency.
