im hoping somebody can help me diagnose a car problem im having. the car is a 99 oldsmobile intrigue 3.5l v6 i drove over some railroad tracks at about 20mph. it wasnt a big bump at all. way less than a speed bump. right after crossing the tracks it seems like the transmission gears wont engage. i can move the shifter but the car doesnt move with i hit the gas pedal. anybody ever have this happen to you? or an idea of what it might be.

perhaps the jolt from the bump made your shift linkage get fucked up and now your shifter-movements aren't being properly relayed to the transmission?
you looked underneath it yet?

So how far away did you make it from the railroad tracks before it wouldn't go anywhere.

I thought you said the car didn't move when you hit the gas? And as far as DIY fix you'd have to have a reasonable knowlege of working on cars So yes those kind of people could fix it.

could be as simple as a transmission mount.
could be as complicated as that was the last bump that band on the trans could take
but i bet it killed the transmission mount

you looked underneath it yet?
This is my guess. And yes you could fix it yourself.

Sounds like the transmission in general might be shot. I've seen it happen on a few automatics like that, after a big bump like railroad tracks or potholes.

not the linkage. it shifts fine when its cold but not when its warmed up. time to price transmissions i think.

waaaaait!
ok shifts fine when its cold.... which means thetransmission fluid is thick.... you have either 1) the wrong atf fluid 2) really old atf fluid
you bands may be worn, and this may just be a temp fix...
transmission flush at jiffy lube is less than 100 bux.
transmission rebuild will be like 800 to 1000 and a transmission will be more
junk yard transmission might be 300 or 400
i'd try getting some lucas brand transmission fluid stabilizer in there... its thick... infact i might just put straight lucas oil stabilizer in there on top of your old fluid. to thicken it up.

id just completely change the fluid if you think that's the problem. because making It thicker may not fix the problem.
if any check engine lights are on id get the codes checked and that could possibly say which sensor is bad, if that may be the case.

if you smell the stick... bad fluid smells like toast... or like burnt toast if its REALLY bad.
