The process of mummification is a rather interesting practice..

Is it peculiar to Egypt alone, or are there accounts of this kind of ritual behaviour in other cultures also?

there have been "accidental" mummies found high up in the Andes, the Alps, in the Gobi desert and elsewhere. I don't know if there were other ancient cultures who actually practiced it though.
interesting thing is that our modern culture kinda practices mummification. if you have an open casket funeral, more than likely you'll be mummified. your blood will be drained and replaced with a fluid like formaldehyde to preserve your body and you'll wear makeup and a sick little smile to your funeral so your loved ones can look in and say "oh, he looks so peaceful!" or something like that. it's kind of a sickening ritual if you ask me.
I prefer the Jewish funeral - just put me in the fucking ground. fast!
