Some thoughts I've been having.....
    #2140464 - 11/27/03 04:57 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Sometimes I think

If a cow eats 100lbs of food it has the ability to gain only 10lbs. Thats 10 times more biomass then what the cow will gain in return. If you had a field of cows that you were raising for human consumption, how many fields of crop would you need? and this is just the crop for the cows, not the humans, how many acres of forest was cut down for the crop fields and the cow field? It takes the cow more energy to digest that food then the cow will give us when we eat him. We could eat 100lbs of crop and have way more energy and take less energy from the world as a whole. We could inturn have more forest. Vegetarianism as a means for world energy?

This week someone threw a kitten out of a car window going 100km an hour on the highway. How could someone hurt something so helpless, I would have taken the kitten, its just sick.

On the subject of hurting those that are helpless, lets take a look at the way we treat people, sometimes its just as sick. Easy on those kids, sometimes life deals us a shity hand.

If someone said "I want you in my life, I am your friend" wouldn't you be crazy to turn them away?

Sometimes I think and I think theres more to come....

I chose to be a vegetarian for a few years becuase I believed it was important to eat lower on the food chain. For example, a ten pound sea bass eats 80 pounds of minnows before reaching it's 10 pound size. These 80 pounds of minnows had to eat 260 pounds of krill to reach their size. This 260 pounds of krill had to consume 580 pounds of algae to reach it's size. The higher up you eat on the food chain, the less efficient you are being. The earth recieves a budgeted amount of sunlight, and how we use that sunlight (either by eating 580 pounds of algae or a 10 pound fish) is up to the individual.

Yeah, its true, the world would be able to feed more people if we ate more plants and fewer animals. 10x as much too. Gill's all introspective today, ribbit.

No. About 90% of the food you eat is burnt off as heat.

So? Does it matter if its meat or vegetable that is burnt away?

In the past 20 years approximately one million species have disappered from the worlds tropical forests.  From 1960-1985 over 40% of Central America's rain forest were destroyed to create grazing land for cattle.  The United States imports over 1000,000 ton's of beef from Central America each year.  It takes 23 gallons of water to produce a pound of tomatoes while it takes 5214 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef.  One acre of land can produce 200,000 pounds of potatoes while one acre of land can produce 165 pounds of beef.  The U.S cattle industry produces 158 millon tons of waste per year.  And livestock is the number one cause of water pollution in the United States.

that's what my hippie friend told me,  it's real shaddy if u think about it.  But i still love going out for a juicey steak in my new car that has these wonderfull leather seat!

I read a paper that pointed out the lies and misconceptions used by anti-meat groups. Interesting stuff!

I have cut back on meat after reading some similar info years ago. But on the other hand you can read other stuff about how we already produce enough grain to give every human 3.500 cal. a day not to mention all the land that goes unplanted. Water consumtion would almost seem to be the real concern. The consumtion and also the leeching og nitrates into groundwater from all the cow shit produced.

Was that the real and only reason you went to vegetarianism?

Hey gillette I like the way you think.
Did yall hear about how fishermen always said that fish dont feel pain. Just so that we wouldnt feel bad about hooking, gutting, and suffocating them. I always thought they felt pain, its just lame that they would try and mislead people to protect there buisness.

"One acre of land can produce 200,000 pounds of potatoes while one acre of land can produce 165 pounds of beef."

I find that number.. highly suspect. Considering a 1 acre plot of forested land might be home to over a dozen whitetail deer, each weighing 100 to 150 lbs.. highly suspect..

I think there's too many people in this world already. I have set out to eat as HIGHLY on the food chain as possible, in such quantities that I personally cause the human population on earth to atrophy to a level that I can deal with.

Look I spent a year eating rice and vegetables and no meat. You know what, it really really sucks ass. And I didn't call myself a vegetarian either, I just called myself POOR. Eat meat. It tastes better. Fuck the earth, you're not going to make a difference yourself just changing what you eat.. someone else will just eat your share. It's just a feel-good solution, not a real one. A real solution involves space cows I think.. or possibly just less people eating, breathing, pooping all over this damn planet..

ummm, yea we do. we are homnivores(sp) , we scavenge the land for plant food. but we are hunters too. deciede for yourself but meat is worse on your intestine/stomach than grain is and that is a factoid.

here's another thought...

if you were the president/king/queen/prime minister/czar of a large country and your country produced enough food crops to feed the people in the entire country, would you feed your people or export it to pay off your world debt? And on the other hand if you where the president/king/queen/prime minister/czar of another slightly if not more advanced and well off country would you expect other countries to produce crops that they could use as an export, but is not edible (cotton) and export tje produce to you to pay off their debts? Why couldn't the loses just be cut so that everyone could survive?
