got me some cacti seeds; san pedro and peruvian torch. the weather is dipping into the lower forties at night and bouncing in and out of the 50s/60s during day. i got half day sunshine windows. with weather like this, be well to plant to sprout and not lose any due to weather?

What type of temps and conditions would you be sowing in?
I wouldn't think you would be just sowing outside but if so yes you would need to wait. BTW thanks for the tapestry and I hope to see more

You won't loose any to those temps, but they will probably not germinate anyway. I like to use, as a rule of thumb, 50 at night and 77 during the day as the ideal. Of course it depends on species and a bit off won't hurt (a lot off will mostly result in poor germination).
In any case those are temps outside, right? Inside it will probably be a lot closer to what I've written?

If you're in SoCal why not just go get some cuttings from your neighbors or a local park....that's what I did

Taking a cutting from a park is called poaching and you can be banned from the site as well as see jail time depending on the offense. If your neighbor has a cacti ask for a cutting don't steal it since that is a crime as well.
plenty of auctions sites sell cutting though!!

I didn't realize cutting from parks was really a big deal but I DID mean ask your neighbors for cuttings...not just steal it.
Just looked up the rule on poaching, that means taking stuff from the wild (peyote), but stealing from public land is also mentioned as well....oops

I have planted a cutting or two, but why wouldn't one plant seeds as well if they have the time, both for the enjoyment and education.

Either loss (seeds can rot) or delayed germination. Seeds have multiple mechanisms to delay or stage germination. If you grow your cacti from seed you will have noticed that sometimes seedlings pop up unexpectedly, weeks or months after their siblings. Some seeds germinate readily, some need a little convincing (freeze/thaw cycles, chemical atack to their outer shell, certain chemicals present, etc.). Seeds also have "levels" of dormancy, and they can "decide" to go deeper and make it even harder to germinate.
Bottom line, better make sure you give them the best possible conditions first time you put them to the ground, for that is your best chance to have them sprout.

When I go from seed I usually just toss the ones that don't germinate when I'm ready to transplant. No sense in attempting to grow dirt since I don't have the space to wait till the next freeze! My thoughts on this is the ones that shoot up are the strong seeds and those that wait aren't worth the troubles to me...
OP sow a lot more than you want and keep the vigorous growers out of the batch. I also recommend splitting your seeds between two containers as to not put all of your "eggs" in one basket.

Yeah that's true, I figured OP might have just wanted a harvest but there is definitely a deeper sense of satisfaction in growing something from a seed rather than an already established plant.

Yup I figure its inevitable, you start with cuttings, but its only a matter of time before the seed bug bites.
