Breaking Up Mycelium As A Means To Inspect For Contamination.
    #21397824 - 03/12/15 01:51 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

First of all, this ain't no flame thread.  Serious and fun discussion only.  No digressing into a conversation about LC colonization times, whether or not LC's need GE, or what method of whatever warrants use over the other.  Thank you.

When you break up your spawn, it's like you being pummeled in the face repeatedly by the top MMA fighter of our day.  Breaking apart your spawn to check for contamination is like going to the doctor, and them prescribing you an ass beating by the top MMA fighter our day, see if you recover, than call you good to go.

Also, if by chance there is contamination present, only thing you've gone and done by breaking apart the grains in the jars is increase the contamination spore load creating a vector for the increase of contaminate spores into your laboratory.

Can someone please enlighten me as how breaking up your mycelium is a viable means to check for contamination?

Well for one thing if you can't already smell the problem you'll see it sometimes.  The grains will look wet, soft, or mushy.  The kernels (if you are using rye) will have yellow on them sometimes or be discolored or damp looking.  If you are using a good filter on your jars and you break up the spawn and discover a problem, just toss it.  You aren't risking anything by breaking up the stuff in the jar.  It's when you open the jar you let stuff out.  Also I hear you can PC the contaminated jars and recover them.  That sounds like a pain in the ass to me.  Just chuck them and get new jars.

Besides the day of inoculation g2g or 20% colonized with spores. The only time i shake a  jar to find out how it smells it when im about to spawn it.
If it doesnt smell good i dont use it.Other then that i dont see why one would sake a jar just to see if it recovers

i believe the shack test is recommended to beginners as they don;t have a sense of what a good jar would smell like. bacteria can be hidden and only be detected by smell or the recovery test; also color but is not always easily visible

shake, watch recovery and then just spawn it without needing to shake again
can also be done before g2g, give the myc a head start by recovering in the original jar and not in the tub or receiving jar.
dont wait until its completely colonized again, just watch the initial recovery.

On the negative side I don't know if shaking does any permanent damage.  Anyone have proof that it does?
You pretty much have to break the myc in a quart jar before spawn so why not break it up, wait a couple days to be sure, then spawn.
There is no extra damage going on there right?

stirring a LC doesn't seem to be all that detrimental but who knows for sure.

On the positive side, if you have a serious trich or bacterial infection that is hard or impossible to see visually, you shake the grains and if it doesn't start to recover in 48 hours, it safe to say that jar is toast.  The contams often prevent the myc from recovering.  Sometimes you will get a super weak(whispy, incomplete) recovery.  My impression is that many (but not all) people use this method to ensure they are not using bad spawn when making a tub.

Might be of topic but when I spawn I don't shake at all, I use pp5 tho I slide the mass out give a whiff and hand crumble gently and it colonizes way quicker is there any negative effects from doing this ?

i personally don't bother, if i can see something isn't right that's one thing but if a jar is 95% cube myc and 5% mold chances are all you're gonna smell is mushrooms and any more then 5 or 10% you should be able to see IMO

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

im pretty new like only one year. This is my take: I suppose after some amount of years it can be known that a culture is clean or there are lots of grain masters from agar to choose for what to expand from but in the beginning stages of growing I can say I don't know 100% of the time if spawn is clean. I have a pretty good idea, but not 100%.

There is no way to know except from experience. Some people say 'sniff test' but I'd bet my life that some damn 'good' growers have spawned something less than 100%, not smelling anything bad (as cronicr just mentioned). Also if your a smoker the sniff test is not as reliable.

I found the method helpful because as a hobby grower with only so many jars I would like to avoid having that one in seven jars with the sneaky contam cost me a tub containing nearly half of all my spawn. as I see it, if I have an extra two days (I do) then it's a small cost to have 'some' insurance that my tub will produce.

There is no replacement for experience (if im wrong, please, let me know  )

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night
