Plants in place of FAE?
    #21396389 - 03/12/15 07:30 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I was reading the article below and it looks like this company uses plants to offset CO2 rather then fresh air. Has anyone had experience with this? Thoughts?

PS- They Used Areca Palms

That seems like a very good idea.  The only thing would be make sure the plant is clean enough not to contaminate the mushrooms.  Some house plants even remove toxins from air.  So these might work well also at keeping down contams: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/29/best-houseplants-destress_n_2964013.html

Do you think that they use the plants with or in place of the FAE?

I don't think you could cram enough plants in there there's got to be a source of fresh oxygenated air other than plant respiration

Most plants like FAE too.  So they'd be better off to use both.  Some like aloe need a lot of sun too.  So it'd be best to pair plants and mushrooms that could work together in as many ways possible.

As far as space and how many plants to use, it depends on the plant.  Most should work best as just filters, not FAE substitutes.  Experimentation is the only way to figure things out.

and most plants benefit from having mushroom grow contaminants in their soil.
