so strong it even over shadowed the light hint of bacteria as well?
I'm just seeing uncolonized slightly yellowed grains at the bottom of your grain jars and thinking it got some bacteria growth because that's where the liquid pools

You two are grasping at grasping at straws.
Those jars have since been shook. They are all now fully colonized. No bacteria. No mold outburst. Only fresh, clean, vigorous mycelium. It's simple

The grains at the bottom of those jars are slightly compressed and pressed up against the glass because of the weight of the grains on top. The myc doesn't grow on the part of the grain that's pressed against the glass because there is no space to grow. This is normal. If you saw that kind of lack of growth in the middle of the jar or higher, that would be disturbing, and possibly bacterial.

when i get bacteria, its always at the bottom. bags, jars, whatever. gravity pulls excess water down.

shouldn't that always be happening then? why would the weight of the grains only do that sometimes and not every time?

In this case(liquid culture) a little pooling is not a concern because the lc will colonize the bottom very quickly.

What specific instances do you find this not happening? After the grains are pced they are somewhat compressed. If you do a g2g you would shake the grains, loosening them. These jars were not shaken after sterilization or inoculation, so it should happen every time.

I didn't catch that. Is the reasoning so the grains are closer together for faster initial growth before shaking?

this doesnt happen whenever I use spawn that's dry on the outside. if my grains were a bit too wet going in the pc I can get some pooling on the bottom and it always leads to bacteria like I feel I'm seeing here
uncolonized grains never sits right with me..

There is no benefit, apparently he didn't have time to shake them, or was not in a hurry to get more spawn. Shaking after inoculation would have sped up colonization a lot, because of even distribution of the lc.

I'm curious. Are you shaking the grains any time after sterilization? What are you inoculating with?

I just drop an agar wedge on top. I shake the jar a couple days after to spread growth but I rarely see grains clumping together when I do. they all fly like small pellets except for the few times I load my grains too wet.

I think the shaking of your jars loosens the bottom grains. Try not shaking a jar and letting the myc grow to the bottom (that could take weeks), you might find your jars looking just like the ones were talking about. My grains typically did have a little outside moisture that evaporated within a day or so after pcing. I don't make spawn jars these days though, I like the muda bottles.
