Getting ready to do my first caseing

I have read thru the FAQ's and done searches on the subject of caseing. I understand that the primary function of the caseing is to provide more moisture for the mushrooms to grow from. Most of the teks that I have seen have had 3 layers. A thin layer of moist verm is put down as a bed for the mycelium. Then the broken up mycelium is placed on. The whole thing is then topped off with another thicker layer of what ever casing mix you feel comfortable with.
Am I right so far?
I have seen several caseing mixes. I will be using verm/peat due to severe cost restrictions
To sterilize the caseing mix. Would I just mix up the caseing, put it in a large glass pan and cover with foil, and stick in the oven? If so how hot and for how long?
Do I use the sterilized mix for both top and bottom layers?
I will be caseing pint jars. I will do a casing for each jar. About how big of a container would I need?
Thanks for any help Yall can give me.

you can sterilize the casing mixture in a jar in the pc or in the microwave.

alright, you need to bake the verm and other casing material for 2 hrs on 250-350 in the oven, i would bake it in the tin turkey basting trays, make sure that the casing layers are only 1/4 the thickness of the mycelium layer, make sure to mist the bottom and top layers, but not too much, remember casing layers should only be 1/4 the thickness of the mycelium layer, no thicker, and let the casing material cool after you bake it, crumble the mycelium and put it on top of the bottom layer, then put the top layer over the mycelium, i would reccomend using a 13x9 alluminum pan for the casing, cover with tin foil, keep the temps at 85f, and good luck

Add moisture to casing materials, put into jar and PC. Let cool, put on substrate, done.

Thanks for the casing advice GonzoCool!
This will be my 2nd sucessfull grow. Im hoping to have enuf shrooms for a new years eve party. I have 6 pint jars that I plan to case. I have 2 diffrent strains collonizing, 3 jars of each.
Should I just do 2 big casings, 1 for each strain or stick with 6 small casings? Isnt there a greater risk of contams when you do a casing? Or would it be safer to do case each jar?

go for two casings with 3 half pints each. pc your casing media before use and be sure to wipe out the container with iso even if it is new, just be clean. you can also mix your substrate with a some casing media(starters rez-effect tek) adding even greater water holding ability,i always do this and belive it helps.

Do I need to set up my clean tent for this, or can I just do it in a clean kitchen?
I have also read about adding lime and or calcium to the casing mix. What purpose does this serve?

lime is used as a PH buffer.if you were to use coco coir you can skip the lime but i belive that peat needs it.
you dont really need your clean tent, just spray lots of iso or lysol sround the place before you start, and wear gloves and a mask.

Thanks!
Should the cakes be dunked prior to caseing?
I hope to do 3-4 of them on Monday.
