Non-duality * 1
    #21381901 - 03/09/15 09:31 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Non-duality is a concept that's taught in both Buddhism and Hinduism, especially in Advaita in Hinduism and Zen in Buddhism.  Zen teachers of old, such as Bassui, Bankei, Dogen and others have all touched upon it.  Sri Ramana Maharhsi and Bassui, interestingly, taught almost exactly the same path as each other, primarily teaching their students to simply ask "Who am I?" as a practice to self-realization.  The idea was to return to the question as one-pointed exercise.  To improve concentration along the away, eventually realizing the Self.  When any thought occurs, Ramana taught, one should simply return to self-enquiry, and ask, "To whom is this thought occurring?"

Anyway, this little blurb aside, what I wanted to know are what are your experiences with it?  What did it mean to you?  How has it related to your growth as a person in general?  What was it like?  What has it meant for your life?

This sort of thing - thanks in advance!

a book i always pick up again is the Yoga Visastha.

Sri Ramana quotes it a lot, its really really good at shutting down the mind with all these fantastical stories that teach non duality. one excerpt that is popular goes "one sees a snake, believing it to be real when it is actually a rope." this is given as an example of how we come into the world and we are fooled by its gross materials. therefore, practice self inquiry and return to the source.

its helped me in a lot of ways. an uncanny one might be the psychedelic method, a practical one might be in the work place. in the work place i enjoy it no matter what it is because im practicing all the while. the only time i dont is if i dont practice now and thats became very profound for me

The fruits of Self-inquiry can't be described in words, only the process itself

So we can describe the process of inquiry into the nature of awareness, but we can not describe what awareness itself is as one can only be that

I think a lot of people especially on this forum have benefitted immensely from a non-dualistic outlook. Philosophically it explains a lot (like how all religions can share a common ground and be true in their own right), and spiritually the practice is essential as onceinalifetime described .

Cosmic consciousness arises in the heart! I feel i have learned this from Self Inquiry (•‿•)

Is there a difference between non-duality and the singularity?

Haha once I remember talking to an old guy, wonderful person, very interesting and eccentric, and I had been exploring some of these concepts, non-duality..  I had been reading The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna - and this guy had actually loaned me or given me that book.. and anyway, I had been learning about non-duality, just my first steps into the concept, thinking about it, and coming to realize it was the most sensical, the most logical form of understanding the universe.

So anyway I brought this up or mentioned it in some conversation. . I don't remember what exactly I said, but along the lines of, "we're all of it," or something like that; and he, with good nature, laughed, and said, so are you the poop in a toilet?

and I don't remember what I said, but after 6 years more of life, my answer would definitely be, yes!  All of it.  The Earth, the cosmos, the whole thing. . each individual is, and each individual affects all the other forms, instantaneously; all across the universe, so all are dancing together.  It's like a holographic image, that is an infinite fractal pattern.
