Three Myths about Government
    #21390695 - 03/10/15 11:15 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

This is a very good summary of 3 huge myths about Government:

1.  The rich are the job creators
2.  We need to choose between free markets and Government
3.  We need to worry about the size of Government

Robert Reich was the Secretary of Labor during one of the best economic periods in recent US history.  His video is spot on.

Any thoughts?

I disagree with some of what he said but he's right about the game being rigged.

Sad thing is though nobody cares enough to change it

I certainly care enough, but it looks like we're headed to Bush 3 vs Clinton 2 this next election.  How'd that happen?  I don't recall being asked.

Would you rather explain why the size of the DPRK government is the cause of their problems, instead of presenting a straw man?

I'd like to see a horrific genocidal dictatorship with a small government. Large gov. doesn't cause the problem, but to say we don't need to worry about the size of government is absolutely ignorant.

Mugabe? Early American government?

Regardless, how is North Korea genocidal?

The point was that "we should worry about who Government is for... Right now, the game is rigged".

If the Government is working on behalf of the people, as it used to be, rather than big corporations, as it is now, then there is no reason to be concerned.

What part of "will of the people" don't you get?

Let's say that Obama takes all our guns. We vote him out of office. What, is the rest of the government going to listen to Obama? Why would they?

Amazing how few people realize what representative democracy entails. "Omg! Don't get government too big! Then the people will have way too much of a say!"

That's not really how it works, though.  The larger the government is, the more inertia it has.  Smaller governments are more responsive to the will of the people.

I think it has a lot more to do with the attitude of the population than it does size of government.

Do you have anything to back that theory up?  The U.S. has one very large government and many small ones.  Combined, those small ones serve the same population (with the same attitude) as the large government, yet those small ones are nearly universally more responsive to the will of their constituencies.  If attitude is the problem, why doesn't that have the effect of making those small governments equally unresponsive?

That's a bit of an oversimplification.

not everyone has the same attitude across city and state lines. And city and state governments are operated much differently than federal government.

If attitude is the problem with the federal government, then wouldn't we see at least a majority of city/county governments suffering from the same issues?  We don't, however.  By and large, city governments are extremely responsive to the will of the people, whereas the federal government is extremely unresponsive.

I think you're being either naïve or intellectually dishonest to argue that size is not a huge factor in determining how responsive a government can be.

Congress is the same size regardless of how big Government gets, and they and the President make the real decisions.

I think it's a matter of how much power corporations are able to give themselves over Government by changing campaign finance law, and buying people into office.  In spite of all the evidence that corporations now have substantially more power over Government than before, people still don't seem to care enough.

Sometimes the opposite is true, especially with social issues. Some states beat the feds to the punch, some lag behind.
