Straw ready to case?!
    #2138664 - 11/26/03 08:59 PM (13 years, 16 days ago)

Hey,

That's about 3 inches of straw colonizing in a bowl since something like 2 weeks.

There's a small part on the right that doesn't want to colonize. Is it ok to case this right now ?

i cased one exactly like that one 2 days ago it even had a part that didnt colonize a bit bigger than yours , so i just cut it off , and now its already colonising the casing

yes. You actually could've cased a couple days ago, you don't want the mycelia to really colonize the surface, just as it begins to come up through the top layer of the straw then you case it. This way you avoid overlay or stalled fruiting.

well when I prepared this bulk, I actually mixed a quart jar of spawn with the chopped straw. i didn't lay the spawn between some layers of straw so I had to let it colonize it this way.

so I guess i have my answer. this will be cased in a couple minutes.

thanks..

It's fine -- just try to pick off the uncolonized blades before casing, if you can (contamination risk.)

yeah, i removed a couple of blades, not too much, didn't want to hurt mycellium. I slightly covered the myc with a thin layer of 60/40 coco coir verm.

i hope for the best. these could be my first ever straw grown babies. 2 previous straw projects failed miserably so far.

It looks like you're doing everything great, fIsh. What happened with your previous projects?

all looks peachy

don't worry about overlay - it only happens on casing layers, not on solid substrate blocks.....definitely a good idea to pluck out the uncolonised bits, though, as anything uncolonised after 2 weeks is a potential troublespot (remember, these are only pasteurised, and the knocked-out baddies tend to wake up after a fortnight's kip) with a raging hunger.

keep us updated. how much casing layer did you apply, and what of?

Late for the future - No i'm not doing everything great. this is just an illusion created by me, who has a tendency to share succesful projects only. haha. i lost 2 big straw projects to contamination. I made a grow log for one and now it's dead. The other straw project is taking forever to colonize and some contam started to show up. Hope is all on this small straw project now.

Shirley- thanks for cue about overlay. as mentioned, I used 60/40 coco coir and verm for casing and applied a thin layer of it, just to barely cover the myc. In fact, I never used any other casing material than the 60/40. I'm kinda satisfied with it when casing grains. Do you have a better casing recipe when it's time to work with straw?

Thanks !!

a 'better' casing recipe? probably not, but mine works fine too:

approx 5 parts coir: 5 peat: 5 verm: 1 chalk : 1 oyster (but all quite inexact). this mix holds water nicely, changes colour as is dries which is useful (due to the coir), stays aerated, doesn't easily contaminate, and has both short-term and long-term buffers. i make up loads at a time, mix it wet, adjust pH to about 7.5-8, then store it in little placcy bags, where it dries out somewhat. when i need some, i re-moisten as needed and nuke it in the microwave. works a treat.

i have some new projects underway (cyan ks and aust, mazatapec, fatass) using it, so i hope to show off some pins in a week or two. i've been lazy for a bit, as the cupboard is still full..... but i miss seeing the little blighters in full fruit. dry baggies and capsules just don't have the same visual kick.

sk
