Outdoor mushroom beds in containers: is that a thing?
    #21382760 - 03/09/15 01:40 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I know I've at least seen pictures of mushrooms growing out of whiskey barrels. But a search of the forums yielded practically nothing on the subject.

They'd probably be better off in the ground. But still

I had lots of potting containers of king stropharia last summer. Most were straw topped off with garden soil and others were woodchips. They fruited way before my larger woodchip beds. :dancer:

That's a good idea. I can get those big containers quite cheap. probably less slugs too!

in the only other thread I found on the subject, somebody was saying that whiskey barrels are often treated with fungicide??

So keep that in mind. Big clay pots would probably work well, since I've read that clay facilitates aeration of the soil better.

I am thinking about large plastic plant/tree containers. The soil would warm up a lot quicker promoting early fruiting.

put a liner in the barrel but they're not treated with anything other than whiskey and if you're lucky a rinse afterwards.

Well maybe he meant only the ones they sell as gardening containers are treated with fungicide.

That liner idea could work though.
