How long after snow melts to mushroom hunt?
    #21378364 - 03/08/15 01:44 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Temps are 50-65 all week. I am in central IL. I have a field guide but by heart I can id morels and hen of the woods.

--------------------

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Revelation 3:11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

I guess that would depend on what you are hunting for.

You should start hunting before it melts.  Flammulina likes really low temperatures.

Gonna go out this afternoon and look for those. Thanks. Anyone else have an idea about when morels and hen and chicken of the woods start popping up?

Let the ground warm up a week or two at these temps and wait for a nice day after a good rain.

You can always try early but we usually have good luck when it warms up to 50-60 for a bit.

A mycologist friend of mine says that he finds morels popping up while there's still snow on the ground in my area. I haven't seen it before, but this dude's been hunting for decades and is an authority on local mycoflora.

In the Caliornia mountains, they grow three - 6 weeks after snowmelt, porcini grows 6 - 9 weeks after snowmelt and butter boletes grow 7 - 10 weeks after snowmelt.

Soil temperature is key to morel fruiting.  If you are lucky, there will be rain as the soil nears 55 degrees.

Are Ovoids likely to be found on the central coast of california?

Probably best to make a new thread or use the search bar in the upper right part of page.

They are there, but are not common.  You need to check a lot of wood chip patches to find them.
