50/50+ casing question
    #2137946 - 11/26/03 01:10 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I've been running some errands and I am unable to find "horticulture hydrated lime" or "calcium carbonate" anywhere.

I can however find "agriculture lime" which to my understanding
is a calcium carbonate substitue. Will this work?
It is the all green brand, and comes from dolomite.
However, the tek says not to use the dolomite kind.

Can it be used or not, anyone had any success with this?

I did find plain "hydrated lime," but this stuff nukes anything near it, so i think horticulture hydrated lime must be different...
am i correct?

I'm also having a hard time finding plain old crushed oyster shells (lime), also.

I beleive you are correct. I found Hoffman's brand horticulture hydrated lime at Home Depot. Crushed oyster shells are hard to find, I usually get mine at nurseries or small independent greenhouses.

you can get crushed oyster shells at any pet store in the bird section. Its a calcium suppliment for birds. Also you can find them at aquarium stores. It is a substrate for salt water aquariums. I found that the Hi Yield Brand of hydrated lime worked just fine.

Agricultural lime is calcium carbonate -- just called "lime" in a garden store. That's fine to use for cubies, but a lot of it is high in magnesium which can inhibit fruiting of other species. I've never had a problem with it for cubies, though.

Hydrated lime is calcium hydroxide -- a different chemical and a much stronger base.

Yah! I found crushed oysters (non dolomite lime)!
Thanks for your helpful suggestions.

So let me get this right.
You can use the crushed oyster and also some agriculture lime
and the magnesium will not hurt cubies?

And isnt this a little redundant?
(both are some sort of lime after all)

you can use one or the other. You can use both, crushed oyster shell will help with the structure of the casing and that Lime will keep the ph balance over a longer period of time.
