Starting my flowhood build
    #21374338 - 03/07/15 11:59 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

I fell into a free squirrel cage blower from a furnace, so ive decided to go ahead and build a flowhood. Of course the blower doesnt have any tag or information on it aside from the sticker on the motor, so I was hoping someone could help guide me in the right direction. I've added a few pictures from all angles and all the information I could gather from it.

direct drive G.E. motor
1/2 hp
1075rpm
3 different speeds (lo, med, hi speed wire terminals)

My questions are as follows

1.) Is there any formula using motor hp, diameter of the blower wheel, and rpm to determine the cfm of the blower? (the guy who gave it to me told me its 1200-1500 cfm)

2.) Is this blower impractically large for my purposes?

3.) would i only need to add a prefilter against one side opening if i were to box the whole thing in?

Thanks in advance

I would guess 1500-1700 from looking at it
1/2hp and big.

The black wire is usually high speed, in my experience. White is common, the other colors are the lower fan speeds usually. I make these into fans at work.

I cant tell you about your blower, it does look kinda big.
But blowers are actually pretty cheap on ebay or used, the filter is the expensive part.

Does it have any manufacturer names or serial numbers you can google for specs?

If I were you, I would decide which size hepa is right for you.. how big you need it and what you can afford. I went with 18x24 which is perfect for me but honestly you can get everything youll ever need done in front of a 12 x 24 which will be much cheaper to build.

At first when I went to use spawn bags I wished Id built a 24 x 24, but then once I realized how to do it I started wishing I went 12x24 haha. 18x24 is perfect for me though.

I say pick a filter first, then match a blower to it. Its much easier.

The link in my sig is my build log.

I built a housing around the squirel blower and put boards across the top so I can hold a nice prefilter in place. But you can also attach a filter directly to the side of the blower. Most people do that on the smaller hood

I built mine in late october. I got my filter from fungi perfecti, it was more than I wanted to pay but a fair price. I got my blower for 99 with free shipping (its heavy) so it worked out.

Most of the hepa filters on ebay, I see a lot of them for 100 bux or 150 bux, are 24x24x12 or 12x24x12. My filter is 18x24x6 and the ptefered depth for flow hood filters is around six inchs. I dont know why the deeper ones are so much cheaper, maybe theyre used more oftem but more available?

Anyways a 12" deep filter will work fine but you will need a 12" plenum (space behind) your filter... the six inch is prefered is because you only need a six inch plenum really making it much less bulky and a lot lighter, those filters add alot of weight.

So it depends on how much bread you have and how much space you have to store it. If youre strapped for cash and dont mind the bulk you could probably get a 24x24x12 and if you source a good price for a blower both parts around 150-200 bux

Good luck!

I did pretty much the same thing,  but stole mine from a swamp cooler,  I just mounted it up and hoped for the best.  It's completely giant,  but passes the "bic"  test.  It's a bummer not having specs to build it properly,  but mine seems to work well enough.  Mine has two settings and I have to run it on high to bend the bic flame to 90 degrees.
