Pickard's Mountain Eco Institute * 1
    #21360392 - 03/04/15 10:16 AM (9 years, 2 months ago)

Its obvious to anyone scientifically literate, that humans are consuming resources at an astronomical rate that is not sustainable.

If you do not agree please post in some other thread.
..

The Pickard's Mountain Eco Institute offers many local solutions to the problems we face today. I find this a very uplifting video.

Watch and intelligently discuss. Please keep extreme negativity out of this thread as its nice to have a uplifting conversation once and a while.

I grapple with this on a daily basis, as my industry relies heavily on resources. Not really sure whether the modern world is incompatible with "backtracking" to a simpler time, and may just have to bite the bullet and relish in what little we have left.

It would be a good way to live if our planet didn't have so many people on it.  I don't really view humanity self destructing as a bad thing, our species deserves whatever we get.  If we are as adaptable it will all work itself out, if we aren't we will die off and something else will take our place.  I don't think human beings are capable of making our planet uninhabitable to all life forms.  I don't really give a shit if our species lives on or not past my death unless we collectively make a lot of changes.

I agree. I don't think us going extinct Would be a bad thing. I just hope we can leave some other species alone. I'm just going to try living mindfully and positively and die a happy man.

Some people are already backtracking and simplifying. You could always save up money and go off grid if you wanted to.

Good for you man. If you want to live even better I suggest not having kids or adopting as we are already overpopulated. But you are going to love the ecovillage I bet!

Heaven yeah! I love this shit. Growing up in the burbs of Detroit it was amazing and magical going 'up north' like so many have experienced. I fell in love with that peace and i hope it always stays with me. Since then our 'up north' has become so much more built up with more fancy houses, fences and barriers and way less trees. This is a dream life to me and something that doesn't seem all that far away. But without others to share it with can become quite boring, imo. Im completely able to be alone for quite a while but i still loved being in high school because of my peers, friends, and a stronger sense of community than can be found in 'the real world.'

As far as overpopulation, i don't see that as a problem. Many people see all the deserts of the world as useless. I see it as a garden waiting to be planted.

Have you seen or heard of Jeoff Lawton? I believe this is totally possible.

we can't forge deeper into the woods clearing it out along the way. We've got to go back and fix the places we've burned.

it's completely possible, with or without technology.

Permies dot com has a wealth of information and experience.

What i find fascinating is how much we've changed our own evolutionary path. For instance, walking in shoes is changing our own anatomy. When europeans came to america one could tell a difference in the way we walked.

To me it's also worth realizing that human beings can only truly know 300 people or so, and aren't really meant to know what is happening across the world on a minute to minute basis. It can be quite overwhelming to a persons psyche.

Even our 'local' communities are a bit bigger than is .. healthy (i guess is a good word). Which begins to disintegrate on us a bit. We're spread a little too thin, and a bit too alone against the world.

sry if that's a little on the negative side, but it's worth understanding a bit of why we're here, imo.

Anyone heard of or are using rocket stoves? I made a little cooker one outta concrete but im really excited to build a rocket mass heater. It's an exciting time to be here, at the edge of the new world!

I can assure you overpopulation is a problem. Feeding and supplying 7 billion people at the current time is extremely unsustainable. Sure hypothetically it could be done sustainably if no one was greedy, short sighted, destructive, or idiotic. Until that day comes the human race is the very definition of overpopulation.

I'm not an environmentalist, but I have to admit that I do have a lot of respect for people who are willing o live that way and that have strong beliefs in their conviction

 even if I didn't care about the environment this type of lifestyle would appeal to me because it seems to provide the type of freedom that I would enjoy.  One example being that it would supply me with a way to avoid a 30 year mortgage and escape some of the stresses of city life.
