Agaricus semotus ?
    #2137028 - 11/26/03 09:46 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Found in semi open woodland, In deep leaf litter.
Dry skin texture, slight flakes.
Strong mushroom smell.
No bruising showing as yet
and print still printing.

Agaricus semotus is the closest in my book, but this doesn't show
yellow bruising at the stem base, were i crushed one, and this
has a strong mushroomy smell, were my book states there should be
little smell.

Any ideas on this one? It looked so edible in ther woods, but
now I'm not so sure :frown:

They're difficult to ID exactly. The only mushroom poisoning I had was from what I thought was Agaricus silvaticus.
Beleive me, it's not nice to spend a night in the toilet.

so many fine sized, great tasting edibles also has some rank
tasting belly upsetters :frown:

theyed make such good stuffed mushrooms for dinner, if only
the last agaricus I picked and ate werent quite so bad tasting

To bruise your mushroom, cut it in half vertically. Then scrape the inside with your knife edge (hard, you want to bruise it). Some changes will occur quickly, some can take an hour. Also, different areas may change color differently.

You mention that they were found in a woodland. Do you know what kind of trees they are?

Finally, what state are you in? If it's one of the bigger ones, are you toward the north, south, east, ...?

As zeronio mentioned, Agaricus are notoriously difficult to identify.

They also cause a lot of stomach upsets, compared to other edible mushrooms. Even many of the species considered edible have caused problems with some people. Oddly enough, there are also people who eat the poisonous species of the genus without problems.

David Arora refers to Agaricus as the "lose your lunch bunch".

Happy mushrooming!

Nope, I did a litle taste test, as
last time I got all the way through
cooking some wild picked agaricus,
Before finding out they were rank tasting,
These were just as rank lol, and prob the same
strain as the last horrid one, just pretty
different looking due to different seasons.
