Most likely a silly question but what the hell.. ;-)

Wheat straw when properly pasteurized..........should there be any of the wheat seeds sprouting?

I understand that hot or cold pasteurization kills off most bacteria, hot perhaps better then cold, and it kills fly/insect eggs, larvae etc but does either process "kill" the wheat seeds?

I seem to always have some level of wheat grass growing in the top of my bags. I have done some research but not found a definitive answer....

I've had seeds sprout on me after heat & lime pasteurization.

So I assume that means they are damn hard seeds to kill....

I realize they are not an issue with the actual growing process of the mushrooms but it would be nice to not have them growing and "blocking" the view of the progress of the mushrooms, and on top of that, I wonder if the wheat sprouts attract any unwanted guests...?

Oh, I definitely wouldnt expect that. This is the only time I ever had them germinate on me. Just that one bag of Kings is all out of the bales and bales of straw I've pasteurized in the past. I know it's possible though.

Do you use lime and heat both for your pasteurization? Also, many of the seeds fall to the bottom during a good hydration bath. It should be pretty easy to get most of them out I would think.

I cold pasteurize with high calcium low magnesium hydrated lime, a little gypsum at times. I have tried hot pasteurization (160* for 1hr) and not much difference......

Interesting.... and germinating seeds have been that prevalent for you? I've never had that happen nor do I see it as a bad thing. I figure it makes the ecosystem more complete for the mushrooms.

Agree, I always thought the mycelium "eats" the sprouts and they lived happily together and no problems, but recently had more then normal amount of sprout growth and worried it would effect production..........

Perhaps I should be more diligent and pick some of the seeds out during process, thanks for the insight.

Since the sprouts are living, the mycelium shouldnt actually 'eat' the sprouts. It's more symbiotic with the mushrooms supplying the sprouts with nutrients and on that note if there were enough sprouts, they may suck out nitrogen that would otherwise be used by the mushrooms and affect yields. I may be mistaken or it may be a negligible amount of nutrients in the first place.
