second link in my signature, watch the lets grow mushroom videos
the jars should be on a shelf not in a container. you want them to recieve air exchange. 80F water is much too hot. your jars would prefer to be at 75F. internal temperatures can be hotter than external as the mycelium makes some heat during colonization 81-83F is where mycelium starts to go slower than it would have if it were in the mid 70s.
68-72 is perfect. but 62-78F works just fine
the foil comes off right after sterilization. there's a dry verm barrier that's your filter. it doesn't dry out if it has foil over it. if it doesn't dry out it becomes a great way for contamination to get into your jar because contamination can grow on wet vermiculite. dry vermiculite not so much it works well as a filter when it's dry.
picking up your jars you can do bare handed after going to the bathroom and not washing your hands. if you could contaminate your jars by touching the outside of the glass making cakes would be pointless. but picking them up all the time jostles around the dry verm barrier which is bad news. try not to pick them up very often if at all. leave them above your fridge or out on a shelf so they get some light and airflow while they colonize too.

If you did the dry verm layer like you should have, then you should remove the foil altogether.
I wouldn't even use an incubator, room temp is fine. If you have a slightly warmer spot in your room, even better.
The lighting is not really important. (ambient light is fine)

thanks! The reason I have them in an incubator is because it's 10 degrees where I live and our house stays around 68 degrees....60 degrees at night. I don't see how it would benefit me to put them on a shelf if it's that cool at night however I could certainly take the blanket and lid off the container and reduce the water temp to 75. I can also remove the foil and maybe add some baked verm to the top just in case it wasn't able to dry out??? I know I'm probably over doing the sterile part but it's my first time and all I heard from anyone is that contamination is the worst enemy. Thanks for responding!

This is what I do for great success:
Fill 1/2 pint wide mouth mason jars with verm/water/brf mix all except the top 1/2"~ Fill the remaining top 1/2"~ with dry verm. Cover foil over top of sealed lids. Pressure cook/boil to sterilize for 1 hour~. Let cool 24 hours. Remove foil from lids and set in a cabinet/shelf/tote or whatever. Just so long as the temp is 75-80F~ and they are not in direct sunlight. In about 3-4 weeks jars are fully colonized. About a week later they will be fully consolidated and ready to birth!
Good luck and happy growing!

I would check out the first two links in my signature
60F is fine. I live in cold ass place too. most of my jars have colonized in the low 60s just fine. don't add verm taking your lids off at this point is the last thing you want to do. just take the foil off but don't take the lids off. I wouldn't keep my jars in a bin or under a blanket at all ever

You should have added a dry verm layer, up to 1/2" thick on top of your field capacity brf/verm... To act as a filter barrier because the jar lids have their holes for GE and innoculating.
I'm not sure what you meant by "just in case it wasn't able to dry out"

Yes I did add the dry verm layer but as another stated if the lids and foil were on too tight it could have become moist. It seems pretty crumbly and dry to me though. I think I'm doing alright! I've had them in this incubator for 6 days at 80 degrees and there is growth so I'm pretty stoked. I will turn down the temperature and take the lid off the bin but the foil is probably going to stay on.....unless I should remove that and replace with loose lids with holes???

Just want to add that I have kids and don't need them running off to their dad's to tell him what I'm up to. This is why they stay in the basement instead of on top of the fridge.

Lid off the container, and foil of the lids. If your lids have holes already then there is no need to leave the lids loose. Tho, I guess it wont hurt either, since you did clarify u do have a dry verm layer filter.
