I'm need to find the space to put this thing, it's big. I'm going to run it first and see if its still good. Do you think that a bent fin or two would render it not functional?? I see other folks filters looking similar.

Could create some unwanted turbulence. Give it the old lighter test or grab a cheap anemometer off of Amazon or something.

Only one way to find out bud! I would imagine they’re okay. It essentially just a fan and some circuitry so I’d imagine they’d be quite accurate.

I only turned it for a minute or two, but I can feel the flow is increased in that area. I'm hoping that because of where it's at it will be ok. I'm going to fiddle around with fins, it seems like it's the paper in-between the fins. I'll get in there with a pick and see if I can get it better. Don't really want to buy a new filter, the price....

Could be. But I'm going to hope for the best, plan for the worst, and see what happens.

That's more than a bent fin or two, that filter face has seen some shit. I use a SAB and not a FH, but I would absolutely replace the filter without a second thought. Even at the price you paid, you're still getting a steal if you buy a new filter. Why not be 100% that any problems are from technique and not a faulty filter flow? I think that alone would be worth the price of a new filter.
Stamet's stuff is definitely overpriced new, but it does look slick and is worth it used.

Don’t get a fan anemometer for ffu testing. They aren’t sensitive enough and it won’t work. The cheapest tool I’ve found to actually measure and test FFUs is a vaneometer. Other than that, use incense or a lighter if you don’t care about precision.

Your filter still looks good. Gently straighten the fins without touching/damaging the paper. If there are any tears in the paper you can "repair it" by putting a decent blob of silicone over the tear.

I'm going to try. I figure worst case scenario is I end up buying a new filter. I don't see that as all that bad, other then cash. Are ffu's laminar flow or just filtered air?

FFU’s are not laminar flow hoods. However, they do provide good laminar flow very near the filter. The advantage of a laminar flow hood is being reasonably assured to have good laminar flow anywhere within the hood. FFU’s are adequate for most of what we do. Laminar hoods are a luxury. It’s similar to SAB vs FFU.

I 2nd this. If there are tears, silicone will fix it. I have silicone on mine in a few spots and it works perfect.

Use 100% silicone, not caulk labeled as siliconized latex.
