Prepping spawn bags ahead of time?
    #21364171 - 03/04/15 11:30 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

So in other times when I've had spare time I have pc'd jars and let them sit a week or two before inoculating with no issue so I'm wondering if there is a safe way to do the same with spawn bags?

I don't inject anything or otherwise inoculate other than opening the top of the bag and pouring in LI or dropping in wedges, etc.

I'm wondering if I prepped some bags and just ziptied them right away if I would be able to revisit the bag and safely inoculate through the usual opening of the bag?

My worry is that while my bags are sitting around waiting on my plates to grow out a bit more they will undoubtedly get spores all over them, up towards the top as well.
I worry that an iso wipe wouldn't be sufficient or that since its a bag I would miss a spot.

Of course say "just wait a week until your plates are finished" but that's not my question.

My question is is it safe to prep bags ahead of time when I have the opportunity and safely inoculate later?

I've let them sit on shelves un-inoculated for over a month & had no problems...

I can't speak for the zip ties though I have always used a sealer on mine.

And what steps did you take when you finally got around to inoculating them?

Wipe bag.. wipe grain master (inoculated with agar).. cut bag.. dump in spawn.. seal

I actually used to do that a lot before I was able to keep a steady supply of grain masters ready.

If it makes you feel any better, I have always used the larger .5 micron filter bags...

...so if you are using the .2, you should have no worries

My only worry really comes from using zipties since when you twist up and seal it creates ridges and folds where I wouldn't be able to wipe very well.

Although if I don't break the "seal" on the bags that they get in the PC I should be able to wipe em down well.

I will say that I found if I don't shuffle around that excess moisture from the condensation after sterilizing them it can lead to bacteria problems... I would definitely want to ''break the seal'' to shake things around  a few hours after they come out of the sterilizer if I wasn't going to inoculate them for awhile. Honestly I don't worry too much about how well bags get wiped down... when you feed it a whole quart or even just a half quart of colonized grain they will colonize themselves pretty quickly. I do work infront of a large flowhood though so if you're in a SAB I would probably have concerns as well...

Might be the time to make the jump to a flowhood if you haven't already, and if you have, might be worth it throw a few bones at a sealer

Been debating on getting a sealer so you have a point. I meant break the vacuum that the bags get not the seal on the PC.

I'll give it a go, only have time to kill
