Spawn bags and incubator questions.
    #21345456 - 02/28/15 06:41 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

So I got spawn bags from a reputed supplier.
I used RTV to make self healing ports on the bags.
Innoc'd with spores from another reputed supplier.

My incubator is a red Coleman cooler filled about three inches with water and a titanium aquarium heater set to 80*F.  The bags are sitting on a mesh screen about an inch above the water.

I have a second thermostat in there now which shows the tops of the bags has been about 78-79*F for the past six days (I innoc'd last Sunday).  I think I was having heat leak out of the cooler since I can't close the lid tight with the cord coming through the opening.  But I've been putting a comforter over the whole thing for the past two days.

What I have noticed is that the set up is very humid.  Everything is covered with condensation.

It's been six days and I'm only just now beginning to see spots of white growth in one of twelve bags.

My questions are this:

1. Will the humidity be a problem with the grow bags?  The filter patches I believe are synthetic.

2. Will the bags being flopped over (I can't stand them up straight in this set up) cause a problem with the f.patches not being up in the aid?

3. Should I put more water in to partially submerge the bags to get more consistent warming?  Or should I abandon this set up entirely?

4. Should I be concerned that I'm only now just seeing a hint of growth, and that being in just one bag?  Would this indicate it being too cool?

I think that temp might be a little high, the temp inside the bag will always be a couple degrees higher.

You dont want to block the filter, they need gas exchange.

Six days is right on track for germination.

People get too hung up on temperature when they first start cultivating. Its a factor, but not that important.

First off what is room temp in your house, average high and low? If its above 65 I would take them out of the incubator amd put them up on a shelf in ambient light.

I only use an incubator when my house is unusually cold, furnace on the fritz or whatnot.
As long as your average room temp is way on the cold side then youre probably better off without it.

80F is high for the incubation of spawn bags.  I wouldn't go over 75F.  Also, pull those bags out of the incubator and place them on a shelf.  They will get better gas exchange that way.

Thank you folks.

The temp in the house stays around 60-65 unless specifically in a room.

I took the bags from the incubator and now have them hanging from wire shelves in my closet.  It's about 60 in the room right now, but I've got the heater put on low and I'll measure the room when the heater goes off.  I think it should get to about 70 in the room.

Hanging the bags I've noticed they inflate a bit which I suspect should be very helpful with gas exchange.  Still only one bag is showing any signs of proliferation, but maybe with getting them hanging and opened up a bit things will take off.

It looks like Out-Grow is a vendor here, so I believe I can talk about the awesome customer experience I've had with them recently.

So update, I've completely screwed most of my bags by using my warm water incubator.  COMPLETELY MY DAMN FAULT!  I treated my bags (first attempt) like they were jars.  COMPLETELY WRONG.

I missed the instructions that specifically stated to put them on a shelf somewhere at room temp and let them work their own magic.  I ended up spoiling 10 of the 12 bags by hyper hydrating them for a week.  Despite all of this, two of the bags have given me the finger and refused to die.  One is about half populated and the other is starting to throw punches.

I spoke with Mike at Out-Grow just to give him a heads up and get some additional advice and feed back.  I got it in spades.  He has even gone out of his way to send me some replacement bags to help me get it right on the second go.  This is in addition to the amount of time he's already spent on helping me figure out what I did wrong in the first place, and having helped me with questions on my first order last year.  His dedication to customer service and happy customers is paramount and extremely uncommon in today's world.

I will be using his products again - especially the spawn bags once I get the handle on them since the time saving is huge compared to prepping and sterilizing my own spawn mediums.
