Healthy Mycelium or Cobweb Mold in Bulk Substrate? Coir/Verm - Damion5050 tek
    #21362172 - 03/04/15 04:37 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Just wanted to post a couple pics of my 6 quart trays that have been colonizing it's bulk substrate (coir/verm) for the past 3 days.

Any feedback would be great. This is my first grow with half pint BRF cakes spawned to coir via Damion5050 tek followed to a T. I know they're not the best pictures, but i'm curious if this is cobweb mold or just health mycelium. I have not opened the trays at all, just took some pics from the outside of the tray.

Here's a link to my grow log:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21269522

EDIT:
Please keep in mind that the picture on the left is zoomed in VERY close. When not looking at them through a camera, it looks like good ol' fluffy mycelium on the top of the substrate like you see in the picture on the right.

you should open the tub and take a pic of the growth and not the tub itself! :super:

From what i've read, the last thing you want to do is open a colonizing container. Is there another way of taking better pictures without the risk of contaming the entire tray?

You've been reading some bad info then...
the tub was spawned in open air, co2 build up quickly again so there is no
reason not to open the tub to take a pic! the tub isnt completely sealed anyway
so thinking its in any way shape or form sterile or aseptic is foolish. no offence meant!

How sure are you?

To me it looks like fibers of mycelium reaching outwards towards the sides to grab more substrate. It's zoomed in pretty far. I could be wrong, i'm just trying to get some opinions on it.

Is it a good idea to wait it out a few days and see what it looks like then?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it is cobweb.  It would be hard to get that much myc growth from just a few days anyway and cobweb grows much faster.  That being said I could be wrong as well.  You can also just wait like you said and see how it looks in a few days.
You do risk more contams by opening the tub up again but if you do so I would recommend spraying those questionable spots with some hydrogen peroxide.  If the white fluff "dissolves" when you spray it then it is most likely cobweb mold.  I've had bulk subs come back from cobweb mold by spraying them down with h2o2.

I just lightly spritzed both tubs over the top of the substrate.

Here's before pics with lid off and tons of lysol in the air:

And here's pics of the tubs after they've been lightly misted with H2O2:

what exactly did you spray them with?

I worried myself too much and decided to spray it down very lightly with 3% h2o2 cut in half with filtered water. A little bit did melt away, but very little.

I wouldn't do that to it anymore. h2o2 is not good for myc.
just leave it and see what happens. as I said I doubt that its cobweb
but the pics are shaky and hard to tell.
cobweb will grow FAST.

Looks less like cobweb with the top off.  Keep an eye on it.

In the initial bulk pasteurization I did with the coir/verm with 4 quarts of water, I believe some of it was evaporated during the 20 mins it took to get the water to boil. The sub looked a little dry, but this is my first time doing this, so I could be wrong on that as well.

I only sprayed the problem spots of the substrate with the hydrogen peroxide and water mix, and VERY lightly. The pictures I posted in the beginning of the thread looked very hairy like cobweb, but since the camera was zoomed in as far as it was, I question if that was just what mycelium is supposed to look like zoomed in that far. When sprayed, the white spot was still there, but some of it melted down onto the substrate. I guess if I see that hairy formation again, it would be safe to say that it is cobweb?

I've never seen cobweb look so white so I doubt it.
cobweb looks spindly like a spider on speed have had at it in your tub.

Do you think that light spritz I did will cause any problems with my substrates moisture content? As I said, it was very little.

not with moisture content but peroxide isnt good for the mycelium.
it will stun it and probably set it back a couple days.
it kills cobweb while only stuns myc that's why it can be used to kill cobweb, but only cobweb.

a bit drier of a substate is just good for colonization, too wet of a sub will not colonize fast
while a bit drier sub will. you can always just add more water to it after it is 100%!

Thanks a lot man! I appreciate it.

I'll keep the h202 away unless i'm 100% sure it's cobweb. Should have known better than to rush to a conclusion. I need to work on my patience with this hobby. lol
