The Middle East was essentially divided up in order to prevent the rise of another Caliphate, which was seen as a major threat to British interests.
The Arab spring came, the dictators are falling, ISIS, yeah...
It's going to be ugly.

Another thing that interests me is the post WW2 friendship between the US and Saudi Arabia. Whilst SA maintains face value and has been Americas lap dog for the best part it allows fertile grounds for exports of wahhabism around the region. The area is like some kind of stinging insects nest, no one would dare poke their finger in there without a good reason - there are great risks (stings, terrorism) and great rewards (oil, honey)

The US and the Saudi royal family have similar interests. The Saudi royal family does not practice Wahabism but allows it's clerics to impose it on the people in order to keep them cowed. The Saudi royal family is Western. The Saudi populace is nutcase.
