non-active ID, help please
    #2136150 - 11/25/03 10:49 PM (13 years, 12 days ago)

I have no pics, but I'd like to ID an odd mushroom I found on a hunt the other day.

Cap: light lavender, darker in the center; 2-3 inches across; relatively flat but the edges were incurved

Stem: approx. 2 inches tall, 1/2 inch thick; light light lavender to white

Odor: no noticable odors (smelled like a mushroom from the store)

Spore Print: light yellow

Habitat: woodchip bed, Portland OR, temp between 40-50 degrees

Any help identifying these purple mushrooms would be appreciated.

no picture hmmm.... purple mushroom, incurved edges, no noticeable odor. Have you looked up Cort. Iodes? Or perhaps Mycena pura? Do a search on these and see if any fit.

Something that comes to mind which is somewhat common is a blewit (Clitocybe nuda)...check the images on google.

The sporeprint is more pink than yellow however.

EDIT: Clitocybe nuda looks very likely. Thanks. I'll try and get pics.

The spore color seems to suggest maybe one of the purple russulas. There's a couple of them, check em out.

No, it's not a russula. Like I said, I was under the influence when I checked the spre print, and it seems to match a Clit. nuda visually.

Clitocybe nuda sounds like a possibility. Here's a list of characteristics you can verify to confirm that species:

> Cap dome shaped to flat, smooth, lilac with gray or tan tints, 2 - 6 inches wide
> Gills pale violet to pinkish brown, notched at stalk
> Stalk pale violet to brownish lilac, no ring, veil, or volva present
> Spore print pale pinkish tan

To verify the spore print color, make sure you make the spore print on a piece of white paper. Also, it's best if you use sunlight to verify the color - artificial lights often add color tints and and can confuse things.

That description is from Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America by David W Fischer and Alan E Bessette. If you're looking to learn edible mushrooms, it's probably the best book to start with.

Happy mushrooming!

If that is indeed the mushroom, is it worth picking to eat? Or should I leave it be.

If you are 100% positive of your ID, then, yes, it is a good edible...I have never cooked it up and ate it personally....so i dont know how "good" it actually is.

Yeah. What angry said.

I've never found them in good enough condition to try eating them. They are listed as one of the better edible mushrooms.

Be sure you confirm the entire list of features I listed.

Happy mushrooming!
