Enlil,

what would you suggest for someone who has good credit, and, in their lifetime, is sure to incur lots of student debt.

Surely the best idea is to get a job!

But, hypothetically, what if I couldn't find a decent paying job? How can I keep my credit up, and my payments down?

I heard about consolidation, but I don't know much about that.

The method I use now is to pay off the loans with the highest interest rates first, and then move on to the next. But, again, what happens if I don't make enough to even make the base payments?

What is your input?

If they are government loans then the IBR program if not than I have no idea

They are government. I will check IBR out and report back.

Ah!

Interesting indeed. I will remember this for sure! In fact, this could help me out immensely.

Thank you for the information.

Do NOT EVER consolidate government loans into a regular bank loan. The government will work with a person and banks will take everything you own. It's not unheard of people having 100k in student loans and only paying 100 a month. All depends on income and family size.

If you're trying to get a hold of a somewhat up to date report albeit it is only from Transunion and not the Equifax and Experian try Creditkarma.com. As stated before it only gives you an up to date report from one of the bureaus but IME it was nice to have and having a list helped me clear up a lot of old accounts settle some in collections via pay for delete deals  and get back on track as of this summer. It's a pretty nice tool just remember since its free to use your info is getting sold to someone down the line. They also do soft inquiries on your report if I understand it right and its updated 2 times a month when you login. Based on your score and the info they have you can also use their credit calculater to see how adding loans like mortgages and car loans/ new credit cards may affect your account. Its not always accurate completely but I used the site to boost my score from 580 to 670 in about 5 months. I am not paid or employed by www.creditkarma.com as far as you can tell.

Also someone mentioned govt student loans? Dunno if this applies to the conversation yet but if you have government student loans in default you can call them up and enter into a one time only deal if you're grossly behind and in collections. It lasts for 9 months and if you go the nine months w/o missing a payment they will put your account back into active status and remove past collections marks. Least that is what they're going to do in my case.
Hope I helped
