I'm moving soon and I don't want to take the bacillus with me
    #21339522 - 02/27/15 05:37 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

So I started growing about 6 months ago, and my grows have been plagued with bacillus. Due to ineptitude I severely propagated it with a combination of sloppy sterile procedure and not properly drying my grains. On my second most recent batch of 20 plates, all but two of them contaminated with bacillus subtilis.

Now, I'm wiser and have honed my sterile technique and grain prep methods. A few days ago I poured 30 antibiotic plates and transferred all of my contaminated mycelium to them. They all appear clean.

I'm moving in 3 weeks, and I want to leave as much of the bacillus behind as possible. I plan to set up a semi-sterile lab in my new spare bedroom, equipped with a flowhood and SAB, a hot plate, and a greenhouse.

Now obviously, I'm going to wash all my clothes and bedding with a bactericidal agent before moving into the new place, and sanitize all of the items that will be in my lab before bringing them in, but bacillus subtilis and its endospores are extremely easy to dissipate. I know I won't be able to eradicate them entirely, and I am sure there will be some level of it already in the new place, but I know my current place is fucking riddled with it, and I want to bring as little of it into my new place as possible.

I'm new to mycology, but have extensive experience in mold remediation.  I may be telling you things you already know, but I'll put my 2 pennies in anyway since no one else is responding.

As far as I've researched, bacillus spores are 1.2 microns in size... which means your standard HEPA filter should trap them (as they trap things down to 0.3 microns).  You can use the bacteria spores easy dispersal modality to your advantage in this case.  However, you're going to need a LOT of CFM's (cubic feet per minute) in air motion to do it in a reasonable amount of time (the better part of a day).

This is a professional grade protocol for mitigating something as deadly as stachybotrys:
1) Rent 1400 CFM HEPA air filter from a mold remediation company
2) Agitate (scrub or subject to highly compressed air) all surfaces... then blankets, brick walls, clothes, blinds, curtains, tops of ceiling fans, matresses, etc. while running the filter in each room with the door closed
3) Do that to the whole house
4) Use HEPA rated vacuum cleaner on all carpets
5) Bleach *OR* ammonia solution applied to all surfaces that can handle that (NEVER mix the two together!!!!!! It's dangerous)
6) Launder all clothes and cloths that can withstand it
7) Repeat process 2 or three times depending on severity of infestation
** It is expensive to measure mold infestations and home kits are not that accurate if you're not specifically educated on WHERE to take the samples.  Following this protocol seems overboard, but it is necessary for "starting fresh" in the SAME domicile.  This is what I did, because I didn't move.

If I were moving, I would have set up a clean room in the room closest to the door I'm moving my stuff out of (atmosphere barrier with 4 mil plastic sheeting from Lowes or Home Depot taping off windows and doors into that room).  Move one room at a time (into your clean room) following the protocol above for that one room each time I refilled the room with things to be cleaned and moved out.

I recommend you STERILIZE your new place before moving too.  Shroomerites (and maybe you?) are reading this thinking I'm crazy... but that's because they've never been in a house infested w/ stachybotrys and small children, or had 90% of their mycology projects fail (I'm sorry to hear about that bro).

In the future, the best preventative measures you can take are;
1) once a week, dust the entire house with disinfectant wipes (don't miss a week)... that includes the top of the refrigerator, tops of ceiling fans, light fixtures, door hinge pins, tops of door jams and doors, etc etc (remember that mold and bacteria spores can take 24 hours to settle after agitation)
2) Run a box fan with a central air (air return) filter taped or bungee'd to the output end of the fan after dusting for 24 hours (reducing ambient particulates from half a million to less than 50,000 for less than 20 dollars!)
3) vacuum carpets with HEPA rated filter once per week the day FOLLOWING your dusting schedule
4) Buy a decent HEPA air purifier from Lowes or Home Depot and run that in your mycology lab or clean room
5) Replace your actual central air filter (air return) every 3 months tops
6) Launder clothes as soon as the basket's full
7) Put dirty dishes in the dishwasher, not the sink
***** I have adopted "airing my house out" 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening (windows and doors open) the day prior to my preventative measures

It's time consuming (no more than normal house hold chores, I'd say), but you wouldn't believe the difference in air quality in your house if you do this.  I read a statement by a shroomerite once that (paraphrasing) "unless you're a dirty bachelor that never showers, cleans the house, and has 2 cats, you should be good".          .... I promise you, that's not the case.  As you've already figured out.

Sorry about your contams, brother.  Given all I've said, you may just stick to a very steady and regular cleaning / dusting / vacuuming schedule and see tremendous improvement.  IF that's the case, your infestation was minor.  My post is intended to provide you with the absolute best techniques for getting air / surface contaminants out of your crib.

Cheers.

Thanks for the very detailed answer HM. I also just got verticillium in my old place. I want to leave all the contams behind.

A little over kill and OCD, no? The human body, in most cases, is the largest source of contamination in your home. Our bodies are covered in yeast and bacteria.

1) Keep your house, especially kitchen and bathroom, clean
2) Keep your home leak free(mold issues from water damage)
3) If you have a moldy basement, get a dehumidifer
4) Practice strong sterile procedure

I'd blame your technique before I'd blame your home.
