Should I start pinning?
    #21357992 - 03/03/15 07:40 PM (9 years, 2 months ago)

So long story short I am using rye berry for my substrate and the coir/verm/gym mix.

I put my berries in bulk on Feb 27th. I layered using about half sub and half bulk. I also made sure to cover any exposed grains. Then covered in foil

5 days later (I know, its short) I definitely see about 20% mycelium poking through the coirs surface.

So I have four trays and only two tubs to fruit... should I initiate fruiting now on two and see what happens?

This is my first time doing bulk and I've messed up numerous times and this is the furthest I've gotten.. the arguments that have me confused is

1. Wait till you see the tub covered in white mycelium

VS

2. Wait till you see mycilium poking through your casing about 20% (would we consider the top part casing due to no exposed grains?)

Waiting is always better imo, but maybe we should wait until a KB responds to be sure. IM second guessing myself lately.

Wait So is this a casing or a bulk sub? Sounds like you just layered your bulk sub (which isn't a casing). If so in the future I'd recommend mixing your spawn and sub rather than layering it.

Got any pics tho?

You're right I layered my sub. The reason is I heard it grows back better than mixing...

And I don't have pics, I'm on via my phone... can you possibly post pictures of what I should look for?

You will have a harder time waiting for a layered sub to fully colonize, VS a mixed sub.

I would definitely wait until you see knots before putting it into fruiting conditions. I have had layered subs not fully colonize before. I come from an old school of growing, back when layering and overlay where the big thing.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. Just leave it be and wait, it will tell you when it is time to fruit.

I enjoy your excitement, but we are really only talking about a few days from when you put them to bulk. Think about it another way. Once the mycelium is fully colonized it will need some time, probably a week to consume the nutrients in the substrate. Only then will it be ready to start fruiting/reproducing. If you rush it into a fruiting environment you will leave unused nutes out there for contamination or it will not fruit until it is ready, and you will slow down the colonization process.

I think you should wait at least another week or possibly two.

So since I layered my bulk what am I looking for to fruit?

100% colonization or mycilium peeking through?

And am I looking for anything in specific with the mycelium? Cuz other logs I've read have said many different things... I get the knot part but how colonized should it be?

IMO close to 100%. I have had to fruit layered subs that were not 100% when I flipped them, but they always ended up with contams after the first or second flush.

This is why I think it is better to mix your sub and allow the sub to fully colonize.

Do you mean flipped or fruited? Am I supposed to flip my bulk during colozation?

he meant fruited, dont flip anything lol. In the future i would recommend mixing over layering as well. just wait till its fully colonized then introduce it into fruiting conditions. Be patient.

Ok good because he was about to loose all credibility lol

But one thing I read was to cover any exposed grains with coir due to grains drying out and contaminants... should I do this?

I would put those tubs back into colonization  with them fruiting right now they are going to continue to colonize but much slower since they are in a fruiting environment. Not being fully colonized and in fruiting conditions is  opening the door for contamination.

Thank god I stuck with the coir/verm mix

So when I go to put these back. My plan is to take the poly out and tape the sides of the bigger tub back up and stop misting and fanning. But I will leave the lights on. Should I replace the wax paper over the bulk to help humidity?

Keep area
Rh=90+
Temp=75ish

Is all this correct

Some people do that but it's not totally necessary. I never do any have fine results. But I let the sub go for a good 2 weeks before peeking. I have had trays and tubs contam on me from opening them too often.

I do mine somewhat different and usually wait until is knotted up real well and sometimes already starting to pin. Then I late case and put into fruiting conditions.

A lot of it is personal preference.

Lots of people do not even case cubes, though I seem to have better pinsets and flushes with a thin (1/4") casing. Either verm/peat or verm/coir at about 80/20 ratio.

So you're saying on my other two tubs I can wait till I see something I recognized as a pin before inserting polyfill and fresh air exchange to be safe? (I have four tubs, I only have pics for these two right now)

I'll post pictures when I get home of the other two and see what you guys think of those. They are way more fuzzy looking
