My First Monotub 84-quart *pics
    #21355131 - 03/03/15 06:41 AM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hello i wanna share some pics and hear your opinions about them. I used 3.5 liters of spawn ( 8 jars, 4 were wheat flour verm cakes, 4 wheat grain spawn) and 14-15 liters of coir&verm substrate. It has been 1 week now and, i sucked at pasteurization, i have done that bucket tek but it didnt feel enough so i have baked the coir&verm in the oven (inside the oven bags) for 1 hour (i know i sucked  because i sterelized it not pasteurized, but i was lucky i think because there is no bad smell or view). But since i figured it out that the good bacteria is a good pinning trigger for mushies because of their survival tactics i will prepare my casing layer with proper past. teks. Here is some pics:
Day 2:

Day 4:

Day 6:

How is it looking?
When do you think/guess will it be ready?

If you used coir/verm/gypsum or just coir/verm, sterilization is fine, and some claim its beneficial to cook the coir because it breaks it down and makes it more manageable for the mycelium. I pressure cook my coir based substrate.

If you want to use things like poo, coffee, or other additives, you have to pasteurize them, but you can add these pasteurized additives to your sterilized cvg substrate if you want to incorporate them.

Your tubs look great. Your spawn ratio may be slightly on the low side, but its still perfectly acceptable.

Good luck!

it look good man, how long did you cook your sub in the oven for, at what temps? Also so you should keep the tub closed while is colonizing you shouldn't open it to take pictures.

i have cooked it 1 or 1.5 hour for 200-220 Celcius, and i fan it every 3 days.

This results in partly sterilising, which is contaminant sensitive.

yes it is low but the main thing at bulk subtrates is (i think) making your spawn bigger( i dont know how to say but i think you are getting it  ) so if it colonize the substrate with 1:20 ratio without any problems 1:20 is the best ratio imo because you are getting 20 liters of substrate with only 1 liters of spawn. I think the logic in spawning the bulk is this.

i think it wasnt sterelized partly, it sterelized totally because i give them 4 hour in the bucket with boiling water then i put them in the bags and baked them 1-1.5 hour with 200-220 Celcius then i put them in the bucket again and wrapped them with blankets so it remained very hot almost 12-14 hours. Nothing can stand against this procedure imo.

i was always under the assumption that you needed to keep as much c02 in there as possible during colonization. I wasn't saying it would contaminate.
I stand corrected :hatsoff:

I use a 1:2 ratio of spawn:substrate. The total colonisation time takes about 7 to 10 days. I pasteurize using a 5L spawnbag filled with substrate in a big pressure cooker which I heat to 72 C. THen I close the PC airtight. Then letting it sit there, wrapped in a blanket for 1 hour, then reheat again to 72 C. until It's there for 2,5 - 3 hours.

no it doesn't he used an oven. it really depends on the internal temp of his substrate. during pasteruization the internal temp is all that matters. you can put a chicken in a 450F oven for 2 hours and it's only 150F in the middle after all that time. it really depends.

Besides all of that he says in the OP he used coir and verm which can be fully sterilized and pose no extra risk, and be very contaminant resistant.

hmm nice tek, i am planning to proper pasteurize the casing layer but with a little difference i set the oven to 70Celcius then leave the substrate in there for 2-3 hours maybe 4 because i think it will took more time for heat to reach the middle of the substrate then heating it with PC or something else.

you do want high co2 but opening it up for a few minutes to take a picture isn't the same thing as constant fresh air exchange. it's not like it will initiate pinning, it won't pin til it's ready anyway. the high co2 levels are still going to be there a few minutes after putting the lid back on.

i think the thing with the pasteurization is that the other living things that can challenge with the myc triggers it to pin like vaccines, vaccines contains weaker viruses or their toxic piss and they cause your body to produce anticores. and bacterias like that ( weak or harmless) are benefical because of that, it triggers pinning but cause no or less harm.

i also fan the tub 2 times in the past 6 days, i think it will boost the spreading of the myc and oxygen can get into the bottom of the substrate for fully colonization, and imo it doesnt too long for the myc to build its high CO2 level after that

there are some species that require microbes to form fruit bodies. but cubensis performs without any other influences just as well.

The major problem with opening a bulk substrate media vessel during spawn run is the unnecessary contam load placed onto the substrate while the mycelium is trying to colonize it.  Also, vectors for cross-contamination are opened when getting all pictious with your colonizing substrates.  Those high CO2 environments mentioned created by capped fruiting chambers are a vector into probable breeding grounds for molds and bacteria.
