Getting back into it and...oops?
    #21353224 - 03/02/15 06:39 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

Hey dudes,

I need help refreshing my memory.  I'm returning to mycology after a year or so off and am  little rusty in my technique.  I just knocked up 8qts of wbs with three different cubes (Lizard King, Columbian Rust Spore, Z), and decided to get "fancy"  I've always used tyvek and micro porous tape lids in the past, but this time around I decided to make some of Cybers self healing lids.  However it just occurred to me that that is a LC tek, and I am using them with grain spawn (no filter in Cybers lids)  did I shoot myself in the foot by not putting a filter in my lids?

If it matters, the lids are flipped so the rubber seal is up.

If I did eff up with my rusty brain, I'll promptly be fixing in front of my flow hood.

Cheers!!

Most likely....

Thanks!  I figure without GE I may get sloooow myco at the very least.  Since I store my jars in a sterile tub, I just parked the whole thing under my flow hood and one by one loosened the jar lids a touch so that the lid could move a smidgen on the tyvek sheet.

I'll keep you posted!

You could make new lids with GE filters (I use Felt) and just switch the lids out in front of that flow hood of yours, youll be fine dude!

Take a set of empty jars or something and put the GE lids on, run through a PC cycle and then just switch the lids in front of the hood

This way you have proper GE lids and your jars stay sterile

For jars I cant afford SFDs for I just put a circle of thick white felt between the lid and the band. It also keeps the lids as one peice which makes G2G easy.

Good call punx!  I am slightly ashamed to say that I hadn't even thought of making a clean set, and PCin' em to swap out.  Ha.  Awesome.

On a side note: If you were to build lids with these:
http://out-grow.com/cultivation-equipment-c-1/ptfe-syringe-filters-13mm-022956m-nonsterilized-p-82.html

would that supersede the need for the tyvek layer in the future?  I'm getting really tired of messing with that crap, and all the books I have (like the Mushroom Cultivator) don't have any of the above.

I dont mess around with the wheel filters.

The best filter you can get would be synthetic filter discs, theyre a little pricey but well worth it. You can drill a hole in the lid and place the SFD between lid and metal band, or a lot of people buy the plastic one piece jar lids, drill the hole and attach a small circle of SFD over it.
I just put it between the two bands.

People make all sorts of fancy self healing lids for syringes but I dont see the point, you can just open jar in SAB ir flow hood to inoculate with agar or spore syringe if you like.

I dont have SFDs for every jar yet. I take a piece of felt, you can get a roll for five bux at micheals, and cut a circle out and place it between the metal band and lid. Or you can stuff the hole with polyfill if you like instead, theyrr about the same.
Ive never used tyvek

Heres a spawn jar with a felt lid. An SFD is used the same way.
