How long can mycelium stay on agar dishes
    #21352902 - 03/02/15 05:22 PM (9 years, 10 months ago)

I've got some that are three months old and are sprouting shrooms I'd like to store them but I don't know how long they would be active for

There is a way to store cultures long term but it's not in petri's but I'm not familiar enough with it to comment any further. Be patient and someone will come by and give you a better answer.

Store in fridge to stall growth i know that  much. A few months the culture should be able to rest dormant contam free.. so to speak

Yup they have little tiny shrooms on them... I'll post some photos a little later
Years ago I got some that was completely dried and placed it on agar and about a month later it was growing

Sizeable fruit? Worth considering experimenting with this..haha. i mean if the Mycelium is a solid body you could only do tissue sample transfers if you do Keep? My guess is get a new plate and take what rhizomorphic myc you can..or just inoculate some grain brother..

Make master slants for long term storage. I also came across an interesting post from a T.C. from a while back that claims 10+ years stored in distilled water at room temps.

Hi, storage in distilled water is one of the simplest methods and has given proven results many times over.  Many fungi are stored this way and there have been a number of posts about it.

The other advantage is that it can be stored at room temperature and there is no need for refrigeration.

I know of a number of people storing mycelium for over 10 years but that after 20 years there is a very significant decrease in viability.

If I were you, I would transfer that to a few new plates. It looks very dry and unhealthy. If you are looking to keep this culture long term, do what ya der eh said and get slants for long term storage otherwise you will have to do transfers every time the myc meets the barrier.

I've got plenty to work with I just wonder how long something like this would be viable

After a dish makes shrooms I would no longer consider it viable
